Nice. Great videos. Those drills look like the ones I found too. I got into the sport as a teenager, so there was competition and self-esteem aspect then. It's different when you're adult, and years later I rediscovered some of that joy of movement you're talking about and got into swimming again. My technique then improved because you can find certain things when the ego isn't raging and sabotaging itself. You mentioned not feeling any muscle pain. I think that's true for a certain kind of very healthy workout, that's mainly aerobic. But I also sometimes still enjoy a challenge where I push the body a bit to see what it can do, or stimulate some muscle growth. In swimming that will push me anaerobic, so I'd get a lactic acid burn. I think that's okay, but one needs to know the difference between the good pain and bad pain. With the former you recover quickly, especially with good food (enough protein) and sleep. I never liked breaststroke because I don't like the lateral force against my knee joint. But backstroke and especially butterfly can be interesting too. Butterfly without flippers may require too much effort, but with flippers I found it can be fun. That or underwater dolphin kick. There's a drill that's like half-free half-fly - hands out in front streamlining, a few dolphin kicks, then one freestyle pull and breath to that side, then repeat on other side. Again with flippers it makes it easier to feel like an easy-flowin' fish. I did track and field as a teenager and was really good at it and also in pretty good shape, looking like a typical athlete. Now with swimming as some sort of hobby, I'm almost back to my former state of shape and fitness. However, today I am more looking like the typical professional swimmer, which is great, but swimming, in terms of quality of movement, is a bit one-dimensional, so I started doing a bit of weight-lifting to balance out those underdeveloped areas. Maybe Lolly has some ideas for some exercises. What say you Lolly? I know these different kinds of pain all too well. We had to do a rather long warm up and stretching routine before every training session so that we wouldn't hurt ourselves. I always found that a tad annoying and counter-intuitive, even though it does make some sense on an intellectual level. Nowadays, with all I know about flow and alignment, I don't care about that at all. I do some short deep stretching sessions thru-out the day though, and that does involve some amount of 'good pain'. And when I go beyond my limits in the pool, that does involve some 'good pain' at times as well, but I know how to deal with it and there's usually something strangely satisfying about once in a while having gone beyond your limits and expectations and then resting, dead tired and unwilling/unable to move, haha. There are at least two kinds of breaststroke. I call them frog style and duckling style. For duckling style your head is always above the water, so that your hair will never get wet. My grandma used to prefer that style, and she really looked like a duckling in a pond with her towering, colorful swimming cap, haha. It's slow, and can be a pain in the neck (literally) after a while but it is very energy efficient. You could swim for hours like that. For frog style your head goes in and out of the water and there are also different versions. It's not so tough on the neck but if you are swimming in water that is moving a lot and you don't stick your head out far enough when you catch your breath, you may swallow some water from time to time. You don't have that problem with freestyle. Breaststroke has another advantage too, you can see where you are going, so if you are in a crowded pool, you don't bump into people all the time. With freestyle you don't see where you are going, so when someone is standing in your path, when you see them, it's usually already too late. Also, with breaststroke, you use your legs a lot, the leg movement is your main propulsion, and as you say, that can be tough on the legs. If I do it for longer times, my legs almost feel as if I had been cycling. It mostly trains the upper legs, that's probably where the strain on the knees comes from. Freestyle is more about the lower legs, especially around the foot. Flippers are extremely useful when you want to perfect your technique, especially your arm movements. I used flippers extensively in the beginning because if you want to swim freestyle efficiently your hands have to enter the water in a very precise manner since all the other movements that follow will hinge on that first move and stretch. I've noticed when I got tired and sloppy at the water entry point (when the hand enters the water and stretches out forward) that my entire technique got sloppy and I started meandering around. So I spent quite some time on that aspect of the entire technique. And when you use flippers, you can fully focus on that. There's one drawback though. When you use flippers you are twice or three times as fast as without flippers. And I got used to that kind of speed after a while. So when I stopped using flippers, it felt like not moving at all. That was very frustrating. So I started overcompensating with the leg work and it was very exhausting. Then I started looking for advice on youtube and after trying lots of different things that didn't help, I found this video and it changed my entire attitude that eventually lead me to discovering graceful freestyle on my own: www.youtube.com/watch?v=n969BqeinioThis video is an analysis of an olympic swimmer with a very unique style, she almost doesn't use her legs. According to traditional swimming wisdom, she should be extremely slow. But the opposite is the case, she actually broke several world records with that technique! The longer the swimming distance, the greater the advantage with that particular style. I stopped counting laps, btw. My lap counter only works together with my stopwatch, so when I look at my lap counter, I also always see the time running. And that's not a good feeling. But I found a workaround. I know that 30 min equals roughly 2km. And my speed is usually very consistent. So just by seeing how long I have been in the pool, I can get a good estimate in terms of distance. Now I only count laps once a week, to see what my current benchmark is. I figured, I don't need that kind of pressure, after all I don't have to prove anything to anyone. It's just about the fun seeing and feeling your body perform well, having the optimal experience. And if that's the case, what more could one ask for? Butterfly looks great. But it's also the most energy consuming style. Backstroke is also very fast and efficient. But since I am swimming in an outdoor pool, I don't have any point of reference above me, so I need to count strokes so that I don't hit the wall. My wife can swim butterfly well and it looks really good. But she usually only does a couple of laps. Sometimes I see some others do a few laps butterfly in the pool and it also looks great, but they make a lot of noise and waves for like 2 min and when they are done they usually just sit in the pool for half an hour resting, haha. So just to show off, that's not enough motivation for me to learn it. However, there's also a graceful butterfly version (with less of a dolphin kick though). So if you are up for it, here's your 5000m butterfly challenge (takes 2 1/2 hours): www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TXXkckUL3Q

I work out a lot because I enjoy it. Weights 4 times a week. Dorian Yates HIT training program. Not too many sets, but always to failure. I do 15 minutes of yoga after each lifting session for recovery. When I was power lifting I used to have to take a week off every couple of months to let my body recover. When I started incorporating yoga into my workouts, I could go 6 months without taking a week off.
I do tai chi every evening to relax and recover. Ride my bike and play tennis 2 times a week now that the knee is healing. Going for 3 times a week in a month or so.
But by far the most beneficial thing I do is wim hof breathing followed by cold showers.
Let me explain. I wear a fitness watch that monitors my heart rate, steps, oxygenation, etc.
It keeps track of something called "intensity" minutes. These are minutes where your heart rate is elevated above 90 or so.
After I started taking cold showers, I noticed that my intensity minutes were going down. My avg heart rate during lifting was around 90. After the cold showers it was in the low 80s.
My resting heart rate is 53. After a cold shower my resting heart rate drops to 45.
This is quite bizarre, but I'm convinced quite beneficial. Or maybe not. Who cares? But this stuff is fun, tweaking your body to see how it responds.

[...] Let me explain. I wear a fitness watch that monitors my heart rate, steps, oxygenation, etc. [...] Does the heart monitor require a chest strap? I want to start monitoring my heart rate too, to get a sense of what my max rate is, and hit that rate once a week or so. I'm not sure if the Apple watch style - wrist only - is good enough, or if I need the strap. I want to be sprinting and look down and get an accurate reading without waiting 30 seconds.

No, just a wristwatch. Daughter bought it for me. Tracks my weightlifting sets, yoga sessions, tennis, etc. It's a garmin product. Requires a little bit of input, but being a nerd it's quite easy for me.

Hey, Reefs or Zendancer, isn't there a way to turn off the utterly ridiculous and badly implemented text substitution on this forum? Zazeniac couldn't even write the word "wrist-watch". It's bad enough that they're Puritans, but they can't even build the software well enough to detect actual swear words. It's programming 101 – their pattern-matcher isn't even working correctly on word boundaries. I wonder how much ad revenue this site generates. And I wonder how long it would take for me to set up a similar site that would give us the ad revenue.

I'll have to check my mod tools again, but according to my assessment, only an admin can turn off that pregnant dog profanity filter. I'll email Shawn and ask him to turn it off.

Testing...
damn shit fuck bitchute wristwatch my ass
Okay guys, looks like the profanity filter is switched off! That filter only mangles links and words. I told Shawn that we don't actually have a profanity problem here so we don't need a profanity filter. I'll trust you guys will see to it that it stays that way.

That filter has been incredibly irritating, but I didn't realize that Shawn could shut it off. I'm glad RobertK asked about that and you took action.

Weird that it retroactively changed everyone's posts, unless the text was quoted. Strange software. For example, Zazeniac's post now says "wristwatch", while my quote of his post contains the substitution "wrisvaginach".

The page rendering is generated dynamically from their store of the text, and apparently the filter is part of that process.
