I read that one is supopose to starve the ego to death. This came form an Enlightened God-Man. I do not now think it is possible to starve the ego because the ego seems to mutate. So what's the plan now? I don't know. Actually I'm just trying to keep communication open with "suppostly" enlightened people so that the wave function will work. I've also considered giving the ego everything it could ever want. But when I try it seems things do not flow, so I wonder if I've put out negative thought forms, or I'm not in alignment with the Tao (or Gods Will), or because of some previous commitment has set the future on a certain course. I once listen to a tape set and Lee Polous (spelled incorrectly) said, "the future creates the present through the background of the past." Also I've considered the possiblitily of angelic energies helping me to achieve some goal. I've also considered the demons tring to stop me from achieving enlightenment. Who knows. Then it could be my ego just fighting for it's life. Then it could be that enlightenment itself is not the Highest. Then it could be that I'm a fraud at some unconscious level.

I don't know that I'm enlightened, although I think I've had enough illumination in my life... I think all you need is love - for self - for life. No one needs to read a book or 'get it' to do that.

Oh I don't know. Building, defending, maintaining, tending a projected image of self or other seems to be a real activity. Question: What is the purpose of the ego? is it a distraction from our spiritual self, the bad guy or is its existence just necessary to the counterpart of … what? The Indian term for ego in Sanskrit is ahamkara and its function is to give a sense of unity or singularity to human experience—the feeling that experience is happening to some person, not just abstractly in the cosmic mind. It’s like the focal point of a lens that gathers all light and converges it into one point. Ahamkara is what allows us to say,” I am eating an apple” rather than an apple is being eaten. So the ego performs an essential function. The problem arises when the inner self, or Atman, is not fully awake. In this weakened state, instead of knowing our true status as unlimited, non-local pure consciousness, our sense of identity becomes overshadowed by our external experience. This is object referral instead of self-referral. Our sense of “I” is then defined by our body, our relationships, our possessions, our fears and desires. This unawakened version of the ego does generate distractions and obstacles to spiritual growth just by virtue of this self-perpetuating object referral pattern. The ego in itself is not the villain. Once self-realization occurs, the ego’s misappropriation of identity dissolves and its simple function of providing individuality to experience will remain even after enlightenment. -Chopra We could not navigate the world without an ego.Are you sure? My daily routines are mostly on autopilot. There is no self-conscious sense of me operating in them. Driving around the city is the same. Being "in the zone" or immersed in a flow-experience are fairly ego-less activities. I agree, the ego is a valuable function of consciousness, but one that can become imbalanced quite easily when it is serving the self-image and not anchored in wakefulness.

The ego is simply the animal part of the human being. Without the ego and what it does we would die. Our egos are responsible for reactions that keep us alive. It tells us to breath while we are asleep. It runs the autonomic functions of the body for us so that we do not have to think about it at all. It reacts to the world around us without thought. It's tools are fear, panic, and anxiety. The mystics do not kill the ego or starve it. They do their personal clearing work and they put their ego in its place. A martial artist train their ego to react without thought, and they also keep it under control so that they do not harm the innocent. What is that the ancient mystics ask," who serves who"? Do you serve your ego or does it serve you.

Fly to Shang-Hai and try your autopilot thingamabobby. Good luck. You're parroting Chopra, or anyone else who has even caught a glimpse, with the anchored in wakefulness thing. Unless I invent it myself, there isn't a word, wording or phrase that hasn't been said by someone else before me. And I haven't coined (m)any terms myself. I've seen videos of the traffic in Asian cities and its a miracle that there are not many more pileups than there are. The ego might yelling at someone one second after a near-miss, but the ego doesn't have the reaction speed necessary to manage the reflexes, itself.

Greetings.. I can't show us a mind, either. But I have one, and so do you. Now we are getting ahead of ourselves. The mind is just as imaginary. You can't show me your mind either. The best and brightest scientists can't even figure out where your mind lives inside you. With each post, you are showing me your mind.. Be well..

The ego actually does not live in the here/now. It is the only part of us, in fact, that does not -- cannot -- live in the here/now. We are constantly sensing in the here/now, our brains are receiving a massive amount of here/now information at any given moment, but then our brains edit the whole picture, correlating with memory, and play it back to us on an ever-so-slight delay, highlighting the most relevant details we need for survival. It is the "mind" that then views this heavily edited version, and the ego can then tack on "I thoughts." When you first learned to drive, or fly (if you are a pilot), it was a process of mapping here/now stimuli through repetitive action and storing it into memory, including muscle and other types of memory. When you first learned to drive, the ego/I was probably a part of that process -- "Here comes a red light, I must start to brake." "Okay which was the brake pedal again?" "I need to shift into a lower gear - did I do that right, what is that funny engine noise? Uh oh!" "I am turning left soon, I should turn on the turn signal." "Ugh, don't forget the blind spot before changing lanes!" Because of all this editorializing and thinking, you drove very slowly and carefully. Do you still think those things now? No. They happen automatically, with no need to editorialize or think about it. Most drivers eventually drive on autopilot, leaving time for the ego/I to daydream and chatter on and on about all sorts of stuff, that have nothing to do with driving! Some are even able to carry on conversations on their phone, or to sing along with the song on the radio.... the ego can be quite distracted because it is not driving the car. It is, in fact, incapable of driving the car.

Greetings..
'Ego' is a contrived definition that isolates aspects of our wholeness.. prior to Freud's use of the word to define his theories/beliefs, 'ego' was a simple Latin word meaning, "I" or self.. now, it is used to describe beliefs we have 'about' "I" or self.. 'ego' is often used to describe the part of 'we' we wish we weren't.. 'ego' is often used with a negative connotation, or as a weaponized word to attack someone, but.. our more 'desirable' characteristics we embrace as what we 'are'.. 'ego' is an illusion that divides our wholeness into categories according to desirability.. embrace all of what you 'are', and if you don't like what you are, change..
Be well..

I'd roll with this fraud thing... yes, there is a part of you that is a fraud. It's your ego. It is imaginary. You are on to something here. Pursue that! The way I'd describe it was that I felt like I was wearing a lame disguise, and eventually I could see through it... the ego was like these glasses with the big plastic nose... I am not the ego.... Everyone is just pretending.
