There is something here that is paying attention. Things are happening (toughts, feelings, sensations, colors, sounds, touch, taste, smell) and at any given time attention is on phenomena.
"The listener" is perhaps an adequate word for it. It listens to the thoughts and to the colors and the shapes; to everything. The listener is not a thing as it seems to give rise to things. Without it there would be no things.
It's the one thing that's actually "here". It has been assumed to be a thinker, as attention has always been on thoughts but suddenly it realised that it was actually listening TO thoughts, it wasn't actually thinking. It had a choice not to listen to thoughts. It could listen to the rain, the colors, the air and everything else.
Is the listener the mind itself or is it consciousness gone local? Not sure if the questions make sense, but those are the pictures at the moment.

All other phenomena appear in you. See if you can listen to the listener listening, give it your FULL attention as often as is easy and fun to do :-) Also: What attributes does the listener have? Where is it located? Where is it NOT located?

It's the perception of sound, but also it refers to understanding what people mean by what they say. The saying 'pay attention' means focus on the speaker so that you understand what they mean. There is effective listening and ineffective listening, and both hear the spoken words equally, but the effective listener is more acutely aware of nuances of tone and would also incorporate awareness of body language and facial expressions, and basically, pay closer attention.

There is often a distinction made between awareness and consciousness. The former as unfocused and the latter focused. Of the two consciousness seems more likely to do with the listener as focused while awareness is a background. Its not easy to relate these terms to each other. Perhaps someone here has looked into it more deeply. I'd be interested to here about it. Could you say something about the relationship between the listener and the character jazz as he/she goes about daily life? Does it feel like the listener has a function in relation to that, more than just listening? Thanks. amit

I just sat and was paying attention to location and there was an assumption that it was located in the head, but it shifted to outside, "in front of" but only because mind needed a concept of location. It doesn't seem to be anywhere as such, but always "here". When listening to the listener, it seems to just move around on its own and where the listening to the listening takes place, there's nothing. Void, I guess.

Thanks. amit Thanks for the distinctions between awareness and consciousness, it brings light to a few questions that have been running. The character seems to be just doing what it always has, thinking about spiritual stuff, reacting, smoking cigarettes, talking to his girlfriend, looking ahead for the coming music festival it's going to, etc... this new awareness doesn't really do anything for the character except make him a bit less interesting lol.. There's lots of stuff trying to grab the attention, some fears and beliefs about who it needs to be, what it's losing. Wondering about writing it down on paper to get some clarity but it hasn't happening these days so much. Just watching.

The listener is "Awareness" and it itself cannot be listened too... Are you jazz, aware of these words appearing on the screen? Or am I the only one that is aware??

"speed" lol....it's been referred to by the mystics in the Tibetan traditions that what appears in the listener is like flashes of lightning ;-) Where is the Listener NOT? It's nice that for you, it's the Listener, for me it is the Observer, but based on your screen name you are probably more auditory centric than visually centric, whatever name that is used, same thing. See if you can "penetrate" the Listener ;-) See if you can enter the VOID of the Listener. See what happens when you try to Listen for the instant that a thought begins to be "heard" by or through the Listener.

Try to listen to the sound inside ALL sounds, there is a composite central note, or sound, that can be heard if one is sensitive, center attention on this sound ;-)
