This "funny" picture caused me to search and browse Seth on "natural hypnosis". "Natural hypnosis is the acquiescence of the unconscious to conscious belief. In periods of concentrated focus, with all distractions cut out, the desired ideas are then implanted (in formal hypnosis). The same processes occur in normal life, however; areas of primary concentration then regulate your experience both biologically and mentally, and generate similar conditions." —NoPR Part Two: Chapter 16: Session 659, April 25, 1973

"Unconscious", in this context, I believe to be that part of you that isn't conscious (when awake), especially your "subconscious" that creates the reality that your conscious perceives.

The same processes occur in normal life, however; areas of primary concentration then regulate your experience both biologically and mentally, and generate similar conditions." —NoPR Part Two: Chapter 16: Session 659, April 25, 1973 What is the unconscious? Mostly everything about us. What is 9 x 9? You know, of course, but you were not aware of it until you pulled it up from your unconscious. 9 x 9 = 81 became conscious. Everything in your memory, that you are not presently aware of, is your unconscious. See how that's mostly everything in your memory? But some things in memory are so buried you can't even access them. This is called our shadow. And everything entering us, all our perceptions, get processed through our subconscious-unconscious. We can circumvent this to some extent by not getting entangled in emotions. This is called being impartial, it's not easy. Also, we can circumvent by not letting perceptions activate thoughts, this is basically ZD's ATA-T. But some things are so explosive in our unconscious that equanimity cannot circumvent a reaction. Some things are like waving a red cape at a bull, and they don't even have to make sense. Why? Because memories are stored associatively, ~wires~ [neural circuits, the connections between neurons] can get cross-wired and make no sense whatsoever. So we can accidentally step on someone's corns, and all hell can break loose and nobody really knows why. But some things are buried even yet deeper. There are a handful of people in the world who can remember everything that ever happened to them, they can easily pull all that has happened to them. So that shows that everyone remembers everything, that is, everything that happens to everyone is recorded in the mind-body-brain. Ever hear of some who had a near death experience say their whole life flashed before them? Anyone who does not take all this into consideration, doesn't live in a big enough world. The flow of All That Is has to pass through the small tributary of our unconscious. Most everything we think and feel and do arises out of our subconscious, we're basically at the mercy of our subconscious. Purification is about making the unconscious, conscious. Every subconscious repeating loop is like a mini-maze inviting us to get trapped in. If this process has not been completed, all this unconscious data (vasanas and samskaras), in the storehouse ( alayavijnana) in Yogacara Buddhism, is what reincarnates, not a *person*, the person doesn't reincarnate. It's in the storehouse, now, Buddhism knew about the subconscious over 1500 years ago, I'm sure all the way back to Buddha.

"Any good demonstration of hypnosis will clearly show that the point of power is in the present, and that beliefs dictate your experience.
There is no magic in hypnosis. Each of you utilize it constantly (See the620th session in Chapter Four.) Only when particular procedures are assigned to it, and when it is set aside from normal life, does hypnotic suggestion seem so esoteric. Structured hypnosis merely allows the subject to utilize full powers of concentration, thereby activating unconscious mechanisms.
With the distortions present in organized procedures, however, and the misunderstandings of the practitioners, the phenomenon seems to show a different face indeed. The subject agrees to accept the beliefs of the hypnotist.
Since telepathy exists (as described in Chapter Three), the subject will react not only to verbal commands but to the unspoken beliefs of the practitioner, thereby "proving," of course, the hypnotist's theory of what his profession is.
Hypnosis clearly shows in concentrated form the way in which your beliefs affect your behavior in normal life. The various methods simply focus all of your concentration upon a specific area, shutting out any distractions.
(Long pause at 9:54.) Your beliefs act like a hypnotist, then. As long as the particular directions are given, so will your "automatic" experience conform. The one suggestion that can break through is this: "I create my reality, and the present is my point of power." If you do not like the effects of a belief you must alter it, for no manipulation of the exterior conditions themselves will release you. If you truly understand your power of action and decision in the present, then you will not be hypnotized by past events.
Think of the present as a pool of experience drawn from many sources, fed, in your terms, by tributaries from both the past and the future. There are an infinite number of such tributaries (probabilities), and through your beliefs you choose from these, adjusting their currents."

"Again, you make your own reality. When you view the world, social groups, political groups, your friends, your private experience — these are all attracted into your realm of activity by your beliefs. Natural hypnosis, as explained in the last chapter, leads you to seek out those situations that will confirm your beliefs, and to avoid those that threaten them. You will often try to project a problem outward to free yourself. If this is done the question at issue will seem forever outside of you, beyond solution, and of mass proportion. ... You can project your dilemmas or your abilities outward into other avenues of activity, then, but until you realize that you form your reality and that your power resides in the moment, you will not be able to solve your problems nor utilize your strengths properly."

What should (I do) now?- "[... 7 paragraphs ...]
There is much that you do not know regarding this kind of session, and the means to which it may be put. Ruburt has endeavored to speak to Pete and explain to him how his ability should be used and should not be used.
He understands what Ruburt has told him, and I am certain that he will explain it well to you. Briefly however, psychic development should lead to overall personality development. It should not be used in order to make things easier in physical terms, though I understand indeed that this is a temptation, and an understandable one. Nevertheless, the fact remains that psychic development results in something else entirely. The person involved must then demand more of himself …
[... 2 paragraphs ...]
Now, the love that binds you all is a close, sometimes open… (words missed again)…that which is too much for him at this time… (and again.)… This sort of session is not primarily to tell you what you should do, Stephen. It is not a means of helping you avoid decision, my good friend. The purpose of such a session is instead to help you develop, to grow in self-confidence and strength through making your own decisions.
Now, the following is to Stephen. You are highly impetuous, and this can be to your advantage, and, also, as you must know, to your disadvantage. You have not asked me, Stephen, the right questions for you. It is not to your overall benefit that you continue as you have in many ways.
[... 1 paragraph ...]
Your particular personality is not helped if I should tell you what to do in the specific incidents that are requested. For you would not be strengthened, but you would be relying upon me; and any errors, dear friend, would also be laid to me.
[... 1 paragraph ...]
As to the balanced diet, I will say this: you are not eating evenly. There is at some times an overreliance upon one type of food, and then another. It is not good for you to lose so much weight, and many of your symptoms are directly connected with various deficiencies brought about through your diet. There should be a daily balance of nutrients.
A balanced daily consumption of protein and carbohydrates, of meats and vegetables. 138 to 140 is the lowest you should go as far as your weight is concerned. Now, you may or may not take my advice as you prefer. In any case I have given it to you.
Now, let us see further.
Stephen, you should try relaxation techniques. You are overly nervous, partially as a result of your dietary deficiencies, and also by certain temperamental tendencies. You have fine qualities. You are not, however, using them to capacity now.
You will grow as you make your own decisions. You must simply take my word for it, that it would be highly disadvantageous to your development if I told you what you should do now, and what steps you should take.
[... 2 paragraph ...]
Now, again to Stephen. Many of the things you want can indeed be obtained by you. If they are attained they will be attained through your own development and through the use of your own abilities.
[... 1 paragraph ...]
Any true success must come through your own efforts, for no other success has any meaning at all. When you have achieved reachable goals then you will have the strength and freedom to follow through, and ability to achieve goals that are more difficult. There is a dangerous tendency here that should be mentioned, and it is this: you must not blame others when you do not achieve your goals.
[... 1 paragraph ...]
Lose any bitterness that you may have toward others, for this bitterness is holding you back. The impetuous part of your nature can lead you to joy, and to spontaneous and intuitive understanding. There is a tendency, again, to lash out at others, and this should be restrained. Live every day to its fullest, and do not be a slave to your hopes for the future. If you do not learn to enjoy today you will not enjoy the future no matter what it may bring.
You have perseverance and strength, and these are good qualities and should serve you well. The return to Australia is a family lullaby, a family hope, a family dream. If you are to return to Australia it will be through your own individual efforts, and not through a windfall nor a gift from heaven.
Gifts from heaven are the results of individual spiritual developments, and if they are not then they only appear to be gifts. The fine qualities that you do possess should be used to aid you in making your own way. This is not unusual with you. This is the usual road for young men, and I have followed it myself many times.
[... 5 paragraphs ...]
Now. It is not easy, dear Stephen, at your age, nor indeed at any age, to hear words that you do not particularly want to hear.
You have the intelligence and the intuition to realize that what I am telling you is for your own good. I could instead have told you what you wanted to hear. Had I done so I would have done you a grave disservice.
You are misusing your body, for you are depriving it of necessary nutrients. You are not giving it what it needs. You are driving it too hard, and it is trying to tell you so. You must listen to its voice and return to your normal weight.
[... 5 paragraphs ...]
For many reasons this is not best for you, nor is it what you really want. But in working toward a goal that is very distant, a goal that will be extremely difficult for you to achieve, you feel subconsciously that you will be excused from failure; if you fail you can then say that it was because so many obstacles were in your way.
[... 3 paragraphs ...]
Now. You need not be afraid of failure, and this is your main difficulty. You have strength and ability that you do not realize you possess, and it will withstand you. You do not have to be afraid of testing yourself against attainable goals. You do not have to look for windfalls.
You have your own abilities, and properly used they will lead to your own development and happiness. Remember, no one owes you anything, but you owe everything to yourself. Now if I sound like the old man from the mountain, so must it be. My heartiest good wishes to you however.
[... 5 paragraph ...]
Now this is only an impression. We will perhaps pursue it in a moment—a Denver connection, or a man’s name… Dan, or the man will have a connection with Denver. This is a probability and not a frozen future, however. Now give is a moment. (Pause.)
[... 2 paragraphs ...]
Julie, Steve, and Pete—You should all read any books you can find concerning parapsychology and psychic phenomena. The more you read the more you will understand of Pete’s ability, and the more indeed that you can develop your own abilities. For each individual has inner senses, whether or not he knows that he does, and these should be developed.

"the Ruburt I was is not the Ruburt that Ruburt is in his reality"- "In certain terms, for instance, I am a future of Ruburt, but the "past" is always freshly creative. Ruburt's life as he knows it is not in my memory — because I did different things when I was Ruburt. And he is not bound by that reality that was mine.
(Leaning forward, speaking intently but half-humorously:) I have memories of being Ruburt — but the Ruburt I was is not the Ruburt that Ruburt is in his reality. He surprises me, and his reactions alter my past. In his terms I am a future self, with far greater knowledge, yet he uses that knowledge to alter his present reality; and when I was Ruburt I did not have that knowledge.
You can say then that I am altering my own past, but Ruburt's present experience also changes my present experience — and so there is an unending interchange. The same kind of interrelationship occurs with each individual now alive, in your terms, whether or not conscious awareness is involved. Ruburt is exploring time as he probes the reality of his own psyche, then.
You must begin any study from your own viewpoint, from your own ledge, but your personal living experience is always the main source of information. Within you as you know yourself are all of the hints you need, if you are but willing to follow them; and these will not destroy the fabric of physical reality, but instead show you more clearly the structure of its miraculous patterns."

"I use words because presently they make sense to you but hopefully behind the words that I speak, you sense the inner vitality which has no need for them and hopefully listening to me, you sense, if only dimly, the wisdom of the self within each of you that is triumphant in its own wisdom, its own spontaneous freewheeling wisdom upon which your intellect rests. The fine and terrible weapon of the intellect should, indeed, terrify even the gods, for there it sits atop of your heads so sure of its function and its worth and its permanence, and its knowledge and it judges everything according to those rules which it has itself established"

"... health is not a static state in any case...
You should desire good health because it is a natural state of your being. You should trust in the innate intelligence of your own being—which produces good health. Health is a natural state of your being. Through your physical image the energy of the universe expresses itself. You as an individualized consciousness are a part of this, and you cannot express yourself fully nor fulfill your purpose as an identity, as an individual, if you are not in good health—for the effects of the body are felt in the mind...and the effects of the mind are felt in the body. You distort the picture."

You distort the picture." —ECS1 ESP Class Session, June 3, 1969 "However, I want to clear up an issue. If you are in poor health, this does not mean that you are an evil person. It means that you have a block in that particular area in which you are unable to utilize energy constructively. And if you are not at the top of your profession, the same thing applies. It does not follow that those in excellent health are more blessed than others. It does mean that in that particular area they are able to utilize energy more effectively. And theoretically, theoretically, if you are using energy the way you should, you would indeed be at the top of your profession and in excellent health and filled with abundance. Now various kinds of lacks can show up in many ways—in mental deficiencies—a man or a woman who has strong and definite mental deficiencies—who has strong negative habits—such a person has blocks in those areas. You may not attain perfection now—I have not attained it. But it is the ideal toward which we must work. I do not want you to have the attitude, however, or make the implication, that your health or status in any way automatically, and alone, is an indication of your spiritual wealth—or lack of it. Some of you, for example, do well in certain areas and are blocked in others. We want to get rid of the blocks. You are working toward this ideal, and the ideal is—and you will achieve it—to use all your abilities, all of your capabilities" —ECS1 ESP Class Session, June 3, 1969

"[... 3 paragraphs ...]
Now, there are some philosophical matters that I would like to clear. Ruburt has been somewhat confused concerning some of these matters. The conventional Christian concept of God has been in many ways a convenient one, and it carries with it many truths. It is true, you see, while it is not true.
When you realize that this is a symbol only then you begin to see more and come closer to an understanding, not further away from an understanding. There is no personal god-individual in Christian terms and yet you do have access to a portion of All That Is, that is highly attuned to you only above all others.
In this respect, you see, there is a personal god, if those are the words you use. There is a portion of All That Is, that is directed and focused upon every individual consciousness. A portion of All That Is resides within and is a part of every consciousness. Every consciousness is therefore cherished and protected individually. There are automatic electromagnetic connections that exist here.
[... 1 paragraph ...]
Now there is even something like the idea of a personality god, but hardly in the terms used by theologians. The personality of God, as it is generally conceived is again a one-dimensional concept based upon man’s small knowledge of his own psychology.
Many of the old ideas of precivilization come closer to anything near the truth. What you prefer to think of as God is basically and above all, indeed as I have said, an infinite energy gestalt: or pyramid consciousness. It is aware of itself as being, for example, you, Joseph. It is aware of itself as what seems to you as your own future and past selves.
It is aware of itself as the smallest seed, both those that grow and those that do not grow. The personality of this gestalt is beyond comprehension at this point. It is both demanding and compassionate. The word, justice, is a human one, always implying punishment. And it has nothing to do with the God concept.
While there is a portion of All That Is, that is aware of itself as you, for example, a portion that is indeed focused within your existence, whose energy is directed within you, and to whom you can call for help when necessary, there is also an overall god-personality that is aware of itself also as something that is more than the sum of its creations. This is All That Is, in the deepest sense.
I am trying to make this as simple as possible. The part of All That Is, that is aware of itself as you, is also aware of itself as something more than you. This portion that knows itself as you and as more than you is the personal god, you see. Again: This gestalt, this portion of All That Is, looks out for your interests and may be called upon in a personality manner. But this portion is only a part, itself, of All That Is.
[... 3 paragraphs ...]
But, you see, even this overall pyramid gestalt is not static. All or most concepts of a god deal with a static god and herein lies the main theological difficulties. The awareness and experience of this overall gestalt constantly change and grow. Again, there is no static god. When you say, “This is God", then God is already something else. I am using the term God for simplicity’s sake.
[... 5 paragraphs ...]
The inner self or the whole personality consists of many such egos, as you know, but the inner self is also aware of itself as something more than the sum of its parts. Now this something more than the sum of its parts is a curious phrase, but within it lies a key that can give you some small understanding of what God may be.
Again, the term God is used simply because it is an accepted term for the reality we are discussing. That which knows itself, which experiences itself within many forms and yet knows itself as something apart from the total of its sums, that left-over, unexplainable remnant you see, can be thought of as original action, original consciousness, prime mover, or consciousness as distinct from its own creations, of which it is also part.
[... 6 paragraphs ...]
I do not mean to imply, necessarily, progression here. Theoretically, you see, you will one day be a fully conscious portion of the personal god to whom you may now pray. By then, you see, you will be aware of further gestalts. Do you see?

' Concepts like the Tao, Yin and Yang, and other such symbols are mental tools that, while somewhat more efficient than scientific instruments, program "reality" with a different kind of biased perception that is even more difficult to detect.
'Only determined, intensive personal inner exploration will yield profound insights; a search in which the comfortable cloak of familiar symbols is discarded, in which the individual delves into the essence of his own psyche to discover the meanings of self and the universe. From these experiences new, freshly glittering symbols will emerge that are significant for the world and form the basis for new civilizations.
'Every person embarks on such a search to some extent, and every search is completely different and yet universal. In this comprehensive pursuit there are no answers that can be given -- only clues disguised as answers -- only clues and patterns of meaning that ultimately emerge from each individual psyche as it unravels itself.'

SESSION 620, OCTOBER 11, 1972
*****
Your beliefs generate emotion
*****
your conscious thinking largely determines your emotions, and not the other way around. Your beliefs generate the appropriate emotion that is implied. A long period of inner depression does not just come upon you. Your emotions do not betray you. Instead, over a period of time you have been consciously entertaining negative beliefs that then generated the strong feelings of despondency. If emotion could be trusted above conscious reasoning then there would be little point in aware thought at all. You would not need it. You are not at the mercy of your emotions, either, for they are meant to follow the flow of your reasoning. Your mind is meant to perceive the physical environment clearly, and its judgments about the environment then activate the body's mechanisms to bring about proper response. If your beliefs about existence are fearful, then the emotional reactions will be those leading to stress.
*****
Your imagination of course fires your emotions, and it also follows our beliefs faithfully. As you think so you feel, and not the other way around.
*****
you hypnotize yourself constantly with your own conscious thoughts and suggestions. The term hypnosis merely applies to a quite normal state in which you concentrate your attention, narrowing your focus to a particular area of thought or belief. You concentrate with great vigor upon one idea, usually to the exclusion of others. It is a quite conscious performance. As such it also portrays the importance of belief, for using hypnosis you "force-feed" a belief to yourself, or one given to you by another — a "hypnotist"; but you concentrate all of your attention upon the idea presented.
*****
your emotions and actions follow your beliefs. If you believe you are sick then for all intents and purposes you are sick. If you believe that you are healthy then you are healthy. There is much written about the nature of healing, and there will be material in this book dealing with it, but there is also healing-in-reverse, in which case an individual loses a belief in his or her health and accepts instead the idea of personal illness. (Pause at 10:22.) Here the belief itself will generate the negative emotions that will, indeed, bring about a physical or emotional illness. The imagination will follow, painting dire mental pictures of a particular condition. Before long physical data bears out the negative belief; negative in that it is far less desirable than a concept of health.
*****
a person would have to believe that an unhealthy condition was the best way to serve another purpose
*****
One belief, of course, can be dependent upon many others
*****
The mind does not hold just active beliefs. It contains many others in a passive state. These lie latent, ready to be focused upon and used; any of them can be brought to the fore when a conscious thought acts as a stimulus.
*****
If you divert your thoughts from the negative ideas to the positive ones, then your concentration will begin to alter the balance.
*****
the [human] species developed reasoning abilities that are meant to evolve and grow as they are used. Your consciousness expands as you use it. You become "more" conscious as you exercise these faculties.
*****
in such diversified, rich environment-possibilities, the human psyche needed and developed a conscious mind that could make fairly concise and accurate "minute by minute" judgments and evaluations. As the conscious mind grew, now, so did the range of imagination. The conscious mind is a vehicle for the imagination in many ways. The greater its knowledge the further the reach of imagination. In return imagination enriches conscious reasoning and emotional experience.
*****
The mature conscious mind, once more, accepts data from the exterior world and from the interior one. It is only when you believe that consciousness must be attuned only to exterior conditions that you force it to cut itself off from inner knowledge, intuitional "voices," and the depths from which it springs.

"[... 3 paragraphs ...]
When you ask: “How are events formed?” you more or less expect an answer couched in those terms. The answer is not that simple. The origin of events lies in that creative, subjective realm of being with which you are usually least concerned. This state of dreaming provides an inner network of communication, that in its way far surpasses your technological communications. The inner network deals with another kind of perceptual organization entirely. A rose is a rose is a rose. In the dream state, however, a rose can be an orange, a song, a grave, or a child as well, and be each equally.
[... 13 paragraphs ...]
The formation of events is initially an emotional, psychic, or psychological function. Events are physical interpretations, conventionalized versions of inner perceptive experiences that are then “coalesced” in space and time. Events are organized according to laws that involve love, belief, intent, and the intensities with which these are entertained.
Events are attracted or repelled by you according to your loves, beliefs, intents, and purposes. Your world provides a theater in which certain events can or cannot occur. Wars, violence, disasters — these are obviously shared by many, and are a part of your shared psychological and physical environment.
Some people encounter war directly, however, in terms of hand-to-hand combat, or bombing. Others are only inconvenienced by it. Here the mass shared environment is encountered as physical reality according to individual belief, love, and intent. In the deepest meaning there is no such thing as a victim, either of war, poverty, or disease. This does not mean that those negative qualities should not be combatted, for in the terms of conventional understanding it certainly appears that men and women are victims in many such cases. Therefore they behave like victims, and their beliefs reinforce such experience.
Certainly for more than the hundredth time I say: “Your beliefs form your reality,” and this means that your beliefs structure the events you know.
Such experience then convinces you more thoroughly of the reality you perceive until a vicious circle is formed, in which all events mirror beliefs so perfectly that no leeway seems to appear between the two.
[... 1 paragraph ...]
There may be, for example, complications arising from a person’s intents, loves, and desires that cause the individual to seek certain events that his or her very beliefs make impossible. Current experience will provide a dilemma in which a desired goal seems impossible.
In such instances a dream, or a series of them, will often then alter the person’s beliefs in a way that could not otherwise occur, by providing new information. The same data might come in a state of inspiration, but it would in any case be the result of an acquisition of knowledge otherwise inaccessible. Love, purpose, belief, and intent — these shape your physical body and work upon it and with it even as at other levels cellular consciousness forms it.
(10:59.) Love is a biological as well as a spiritual characteristic. Basically, love and creativity are synonymous. Love exists without an object. It is the impetus by which all being becomes manifest. Desire, love, intent, belief and purpose — these form the experience of your body and all the events it perceives. You cannot change one belief but it alters your body experience. The great give-and-take between biological and psychological integrity occurs constantly. Your thoughts are as active as your cells, and as important in maintaining your physical being.
Your thoughts are also as natural as your cells. Your thoughts propel you toward survival and growth also, and in the same way that your cells do. If you find yourself in physical difficulties healthwise, you cannot say: “Why doesn’t my body stop me and assert its own wisdom?” because in the truest sense there is no division between your thoughts and your body. You are given the ability to think, as you are given the ability to move. Your thoughts multiply even as your cells do. Your thinking is meant to ensure your survival in those terms, as much as your body mechanism.
The give-and-take between the two occurs largely in the dream state, where constant translations of data occur. Your thoughts and your body cells are reflected one in the other.
[... 1 paragraph ...]
The exercises will not work, however, in the way they are meant to if they are embarked upon with too serious an air or intent. They should be considered as creative play, though of a mental nature, and they actually consist of mental endeavors tried quite spontaneously by children. So they are not to be regarded as esoteric accomplishments. They represent the intent to discover once again the true transparent delight that you once felt in the manipulation of your own consciousness, as you looped and unlooped it like a child’s jumping rope.
[... 4 paragraphs ...]
Physical play is pleasant, and accompanied by high imaginative activity. Muscles and mind are both exercised. The same kind of activity occurs in the child’s dream state as it learns to handle events before they are physically encountered. Intense dream activity is involved. Some dream events are more real to the child than some waking events are — not because the child does not understand the nature of experience, but because he or she is still so close to the emotional basis behind events. Some of the exercises I will suggest will put you in touch with the way events are formed.
Children’s play, creativity, and dreams all involve you with the birth of events in the most direct of fashions. The games that you play or habitually observe will, of course, tell you much about the kind of organization that occurs in your own experience. Overall, you organize events around certain emotions. These can be combative, in which there will always be good teams and bad teams, salvation or destruction, winning or losing.
