"You usually think of your conscious mind as your ego. It is directed toward action in physical life. Many schools of thought (long pause) seem to have the curious ideas that the ego is inferior to other portions of the self, or “selfish,” and imagine it to be definitely of a lower quality than the inner self, or the soul.
In the first place, it is really impossible to separate portions of the self, and we make such distinctions only in an effort to explain the many facets of the personality. (Long pause.) It is generally understood, then, that you do have an ego, directed toward exterior activity, and in those terms (underlined) you also have an inner ego. It is also conscious, and is the director of all automatic interior activity (emphatically).
Most people do not realize that they can indeed have access to this inner awareness. This inner ego or inner self should not be thought of as superior to your ordinary mind. It should not be thought of, really, as something separate from your ordinary mind. Your ego and your ordinary consciousness bring into focus all of your physical experiences, and make possible the brilliant preciseness of physical experience."

(Jim H. told of finding a man asleep at his work. Jim explained his ideas and emotions concerning the incident, and wanted to know how he could change them.) You can indeed change them, but do not deny the part of you that wanted to wring the other man’s neck. You were so frightened of the thought that you immediately inhibited it. Let us consider. You are terrified of the idea that evil is more powerful than good, that one stray violent thought of yours was more important and powerful than the vitality of good. At least you were aware of the thought. Now say the following happened, that in your terms you progressed to the point where you were no longer aware of the feeling —
(Jim H.: “You don’t just automatically think good things about this fellow, and repress the negative thoughts without becoming aware of what you felt.”) Of course, so your muscles tensed, your adrenalin production increased. You wanted to wring his neck but you said, “God bless you, my fine young fellow. May you live a long and merry life.” Telepathically, our fine young fellow knew exactly what you were feeling. You were out of contact with your feelings. At this point of your spiritual progression, you only imagined that you wished him good. The muscles were already contracted in your body because you did not admit your true feelings. Now three weeks later we have another encounter. Our poor ignorant workman again falls asleep at his chores. Our good minister comes by. He sees the idle one upon the floor snoozing, and he thinks, “I would like to kick you in the you-know-where.” But then, “Oh no, I cannot think such an unchristian thought. Violence is wrong.” So before he even admits to himself what he feels, hiding any acknowledgement of aggression, he bends down and says, “My good man, may you live long and heartily. God bless your life.” He pats himself upon the back and thinks, “I am growing more spiritual day by day.” In the meantime, his muscles have contracted ten times because they could not be put into activity, as the thought behind them was denied. Our poor man is again subconsciously aware of the intent, but only to some degree. Three months later you have had a really bad day. You are mad at life in general, and now you find our friend upon the floor again; this time, perhaps, he is asleep at a somewhat more important chore that you wanted done. (Humorously): Now far be it from me to accuse you of such an act, even in a fantasy, but this time you are out of your mind. Again, it behooves you to deny your true feelings in order to be spiritual — which is not true spirituality — and you say again, “God bless you, may you go in peace.” This time the psychic safety valve has had too much. The nicest thing that could happen would be that you suddenly blew your stack and kicked him. The worst thing that could happen would be that once again you restrain the acknowledgement of the pent up, perfectly natural aggression that is now ready to explode — so you send out a thought-form out of all proportion to any of the events that have transpired. The thought-form causes your friend severe harm; and all of this because you were afraid that one stray aggressive thought of yours was more powerful than the vitality that resides in each of you.
(Jim H.: “In the beginning, before we compounded the frustration and the emotional charges, would you have recommended an action like saying, ‘Come on, this is wrong. I’ve probably done this sort of thing myself, but it really bugs me. We have to get up and get to work here.’ Would being honest with him at that level have prevented these charges?”) Yes. The most important thing, however, is to acknowledge the feeling as legitimate, with its own realm of existence, to admit it as a part of yourself. Then choose how you want to deal with it. You do not make others the brunt of your anger; anger is merely a method of communication.
(Jim H.: “I don’t want to direct the brunt of my anger at either of us. One, I don’t want to kick him. Two, I don’t want to hurt myself in some way.”) Originally you were not angry enough to kick him. The thought existed, but it wasn’t strong enough to bring about the physical reaction even if you had fully admitted it. Do you follow me?
(Jim H.: “Yes. I want to learn how to handle such feelings, without trying to repress them.”) You should first of all admit that the feelings exist as a part of yourself, at the ego level. Whenever you close your feelings off from yourself you are, in your terms, less alive. Then, as far as is possible, communicate those feelings verbally in whatever way you choose. Use anger as a method of communication. Often it will lead to results that you do not think of, and beneficial ones. You certainly understand that I am doing with your case the same thing that I have done with others, so please do not be offended. I do not want any of you, you see, to use these ideas as superficial bandages for your bleeding psyches…. So you are not as bad as I pegged you. You might be inclined in the direction I have indicated, but then so is everyone else in the room, including Ruburt.

The nature and construction of matter
Now, may I please return to our discussion of matter, since the matter matters so strongly. Almost every child suspects that at one time or another when his eyes are closed his immediate surroundings have disappeared. He supposes that when he does not see a chair the chair does not exist; and my dear friends, the boy in this case is smarter than the man.
(“What if the boy closes his eyes but touches the chair?”)
When his senses, his outer senses, do not perceive a physical object in his self-perspective (and hyphenate that please), in his self-perspective, the object simply does not exist. If the object is touched and not seen or otherwise perceived, then in his self-perspective it exists only in the realm of his sensual perception of it. It does not exist to be seen if he does not see it. If his father, for example, sees the chair that the boy does not see, then the object exists as a thing to be seen in the father’s self-perspective.
Each individual himself creates a portion or a whole physical object. Many people appear to see an object, but the object that they see is not the same object, but only approximates an object.
This almost automatic construction of energy-idea (hyphen), into a material object is carried on subconsciously through the methods which I have earlier explained to you, regarding the inner capsule comprehension and capacities existing in the individual atoms and molecules, and is formed by this gestalt of which I have spoken.
Your idea of space is so erroneous that it is extremely difficult to set you straight. For every apparent single object you have, literally, infinite varieties, and no one particular object indeed. From your own perspective, from your own space perspective, through the methods which I have given you, you create your own version of a particular object, and you do it by using energy in a personal manner.
The confusion arising, for example, in the case of witnesses to a particular event such as an accident, shows perhaps what I mean.
You also know by now that not only men, but also all consciousness, contribute to the formation of your physical universe. Consciousness comes first.
I told you that without telepathy language would be meaningless and ineffective. It is true that each of you constructs his own physical universe, and responds to it. It is also true however, that through continuous telepathy you are acquainted with the ideas of others concerning their approximate physical universes; and while you construct and see your own, you also construct any given material object taking into consideration its approximate size, width, thickness and location, as received through telepathy from others.
Nevertheless, the objects are simply not the same objects. You do not see, feel, smell or touch the same object. I will shock you further by stating that, in your terms, the objects do not even exist in the same space, but in the personal self-perspective space, formed and created by any given individual
(Now Jane picked up a book of paper matches and held it up before John and me as she paced back and forth.)
This can easily be proven by a simple experiment with any small object, such as a book of matches. No one of you can see a book of matches from exactly the same perspective, for the simple reason that it does not exist for you except in the self-perspective in which you create it.
We can even carry such an experiment further, and at a later date we shall certainly do so. Incidentally, this simple fact will not even meet with disbelief from your backward scientists, since no one can dispute it, and experiments have already been conducted along these lines.
Telepathy is one of the main binders in the world of constructions.
Measurements can be made of one so-called one physical object merely because inner communication is so exact and extensive.
The keystone here is that you are only aware of your own constructions. This is most important. You truly construct your own environment, and it in turn then has its influence upon you.
Actually it can be said that since the self creates its environment, then the environment is an extension of the self. The division between the subject who creates the environment, and the object-(hyphen) environment, which is created, is an artificial but necessary development.
This development is necessary upon your plane because of the training in the manipulation of energy which is required there. You merely focus your energy along these lines. This being of course the main reason why, as a rule, mankind has not used other abilities to any great degree.
It is important that you consider the nature and construction of matter in terms of this inner, individual psychological purpose, for this is after all the heart of the matter.
There can be no division here, even in our discussion, for simplicity’s sake; for such division would lead you far astray. You can see this more easily perhaps in terms of, say, gallstones or kidney stones, which are adverse constructions, projected by the individual because of psychological imbalance; that is, a confusion of inner purpose.
The healthy physical body, therefore, is eloquent testimony of inner balance. And in all cases of illness, the inner cause must be uncovered; not only uncovered intellectually, but understood intuitively if recovery is to take place.
Since you construct objects, you can therefore construct them more to your convenience when you realize that matter can thusly be manipulated.
There is no doubt that the development of matter, and an understanding of it, will enable you to manipulate it and also at times to discard it almost entirely.
Since the individual constructs matter, and indeed constructs his own physical universe, he can improve these constructions; and his expectations are intimately connected with the subconscious mechanism of construction itself.

"Psychological Time" exercise (Seth Speaks, Session 522) " The soul or entity, then, is not the self that reads this book. Your environment is not simply the world about you as you know it, but also consists of past-life environments upon which you are not now focusing. Your real environment is composed of your thoughts and emotions, for from these you form not only this reality but each reality in which you take part. Your real environment is innocent of space and time as you know them. In your real environment you have no need for words, for communication is instantaneous. In your real environment you form the physical world that you know. The inner senses will allow you to perceive the reality that is independent of physical form. I will ask you all to momentarily forsake your roles therefore, and to try this simple exercise. Now, pretend that you are on a lighted stage, the stage being the room in which you now sit. Close your eyes and pretend that the lights have gone out, the setting has disappeared and you are alone. Everything is dark. Be quiet. Imagine as vividly as you can the existence of inner senses. For now pretend that they correspond to your physical ones. Clear from your mind all thoughts and worries. Be receptive. Very gently listen, not to physical sounds but to sounds that come through the inner senses. Images may begin to appear. Accept them as sights quite as valid as those you see physically. Pretend that there is an inner world, and that it will be revealed to you as you learn to perceive it with these inner senses. Pretend that you have been blind to this world all your life, and are now slowly gaining sight within it. Do not judge the whole inner world by the disjointed images that you may at first perceive, or by the sounds that you may at first hear, for you will still be using your inner senses quite imperfectly. Do this simple exercise for a few moments before sleep or in the resting state. It may also be done even in the midst of an ordinary task that does not take all of your attention. You will simply be learning to focus in a new dimension of awareness, taking quick snapshots, as it were, in a strange environment. Remember that you will only be perceiving snatches. Simply accept them, but do not attempt to make any overall judgments or interpretations at this stage. Ten minutes a day to begin with is quite sufficient." --- This is from ( Seth Speaks, Session 522 link); the whole session is very interesting.

from Unknown Reality, Session 687Practice Element 1 Take any remembered scene from your own past. Experience it as clearly as possible imaginatively, but with the idea of its probable extensions. Sometime, immediately or after a few tries, a particular portion of the scene will become gray or shadowy. It is not a part of the past that you know, but an intersection point where that past served as an offshoot into a series of probabilities that you did not follow. Instead of a shadowy element, you yourself may feel unsubstantial – “ghostly”, as Ruburt did. Instead of any of those things, the imagined dialogue – if there is any – may suddenly change from the dialogue that you remember; or the entire scene and action may quickly alter. Any of these occurrences can be hints that you are beginning to glimpse the probable variations of the particular scene or action. It is, however, the subjective feeling that is the important clue here, and once you experience it there will be no doubt in your mind. Some people will have little trouble with the exercise, and others will need to exert persistence before finding any success at all. This method is even more effective if you choose from your past a scene in which a choice was involved that was important to you. In such a case, begin imaginatively, following through with the other decision or decisions that you might have made. At one point a shadowy effect – grayness, or other characteristics just mentioned – will occur. One or several of these may be involved, but again your subjective feeling is the most important clue. Imagination may bring you a clear picture, for example, that may then become fuzzy, and in that case the blurred quality would be your hint of probable action. Until you have tried the exercise and become fully acquainted with it, you will not understand its effectiveness. You will know, for instance, when the remembered event and imagination intersect with another probability. Whether or not you have any great success, the exercise will begin a neurological reorientation that will be most important if you hope to glimpse realities that are outside of your present neurologically accepted sense-reality. This exercise is a mental and biological doorway that can expand both your concepts of yourself and reality. There may be instances in which it seems that little progress is made during the exercise itself. During the day, however, having made an important decision in once direction, you may begin to feel the reality of the opposite decision and its ramifications. The exercise may also result in a different kind of dream, one that is recognized within the dream state, at least, as an introduction to a probable reality. You deal directly with future probabilities in the dream state in any case. For example, in a series of dreams you may try out various solutions to a given problem, and choose one of these. That choice becomes your physical reality.

from Unknown Reality, Session 720If you are honest with your thoughts and feelings, then you will express them in your waking life, and they will not cast disturbing shadows in your dreams. You may be afraid that a beloved child or mate will die suddenly, yet you may never want to admit such a fear. The feeling itself may be generated because of your own doubts about yourself, however. You may be depending upon another such person too strongly, trying to live your own life secondhandedly through the life of another. Your own fear, admitted, would lead you to other feelings behind it, and to a greater understanding of yourself. Unencountered in waking life, however, the fear might cast its dim shadow, so that you dream of your child’s death, or of the death of another close to you. The dream experience would be cast into the dream landscape and encountered there. If you remembered such a dream, therefore, you might think that it was precognitive, and that the event would become physical. Instead, the whole portent of the dream event would be an educational one, bringing your fear into clear focus. In such cases you should think of the dire dream situation as a shadow, and look for its source within your mind. Shadows can be pleasant and luxurious, and on a hot sunny day you are certainly aware of their beneficial nature. So some dream hallucinations are beautiful, comforting, refreshing. They can bring great peace and be sought after for themselves. You may believe that God exists as a kindly father, or you might personify him as Christ or Buddha. In your dreams you might then encounter such personages. They are quite valid, but they are also hallucinations cast by your own thoughts and feelings. Dreams of Heaven and Hell alike fall into the same category, in those terms, as hallucinations. Now: The physical shadow of a tree bears witness to the existence of a tree, even if you see only the shadow; so your hallucinations appearing in dreams also bear witness to their origin, and give testimony to a valid “objective” dream object that is as “solid” in that reality as the tree is in your world. In physical reality there is a time lag that exists between the conception of an idea, say, and its materialization. Besides that, other conditions operate that can slow down an idea’s physical actualization, or even impede it altogether. If not physically expressed, the thought will be actualized in another reality. An idea must have certain characteristics, for example, that agree with physical assumptions before it turns into a recognizable event. It must appear within your time context. In the dream world, however, each feeling or idea can be immediately expressed and experienced. The physical world has buildings in it that you manufacture – that is, they do not spring up naturally from the ground itself. In the same way, your thoughts are “manufactured products” in the dream world. They are a part of the environment and appear within its reality, though they change shape and form constantly, as physically manufactured objects do not. The earth has its own natural given data, however, and you must use this body of material to form all of your manufactured products. The dream world also possesses its own natural environment. You form your dreams from it, and use its natural products to manufacture dream images. Few view this natural inner environment, however.

The birth of the outer-egofrom "Dreams, evolution, value fulfillment": Session 894The best analogy I can think of is that up to that time the self was like a psychological rubber band, snapping inward and outward with great force and vitality, but without any kind of rigid-enough psychological framework to maintain a physical stance. The inner self still related to dream reality, while the body’s orientation and the body consciousness attained, as was intended, a great sense of physical adventure, curiosity, speculation, wonder – and so once again the inner self put a portion of its consciousness in a different parcel, so to speak. As once it had formed the body consciousness, now it formed a physically attuned consciousness, a self whose desires and intents would be oriented in a way that, alone, the inner self could not be. The inner self was too aware of its own multidimensionality, so in your terms it gave psychological birth to itself through the body in space and time. That portion of the self is the portion you recognize as your usual conscious self, alive within the scheme of seasons, aware within the designs of time, caught transfixed in moments of brilliant awareness, with civilizations that seem to come and go. That is the self that is alert in the dear preciseness of the moments, whose physical senses are bound to light and darkness, sound and touch. That is the self that lives the life of the body. It is the self that looks outward. It is the self that you call egotistically aware. The inner self became what I refer to as the inner ego. It looks into that inner reality, that psychic dimension of awareness from which both your own consciousness and your body consciousness emerged. You are one self, then, but for operating purposes we will say that you have three parts: the inner self or inner ego, the body consciousness, and the consciousness that you know.
These portions, however, are intimately connected. They are like three different systems of consciousness operating together to form the whole. The divisions – the seeming divisions – are not stationary, but change constantly. To one extent or another, these three systems of consciousness operate in one way or another in all of the species, and in all particles, in the physical universe. In your terms, this means that the proportions of the three systems might vary, but they are always in operation, whether we are speaking of a man or a woman, a rock or a fly, a star or an atom. The inner self represents your prime identity, the self you really are.

If a desire for health leads to an emphasis upon symptoms to be overcome, you would be better off to avoid all thoughts of health or illness, and concentrate in another direction such as work. This follows regardless of the desired end, be it wealth, fame, or so forth. Such an emphasis can lead to a focus upon the obstacles that stand in the way. This reinforces the negative condition.
Confidence is extremely important. It will lead to more confidence, and of itself wipes out the fear that causes most negative conditions."

(dreams, evolution, value fulfillment: Session 903) Grid of PerceptionThe world as you know it exists as it does because you are yourself a living portion of a vast “conscious grid” of perception.
Every cell, in those terms, is a sender and a receiver. All of the larger divisions of life – the mammals, fish, birds and so forth – are an integral part of that living gridwork. The picture of the world is not only the result of those messages transmitted and received, however, but is also caused by the relationships between those messages. In your terms, then, all of life’s large classifications were present “at the beginning of the world”. Otherwise there would have been vast holes in that grid of perception that makes possible the very sensations of physical life.
In a manner of speaking, the physical universe is “transposed” upon another reality that must be its source. The world was and is created in dimensions outside of time, and outside of space as you understand it.
