a grey clap, gusting daffodils and tall grass waving in the sudden rain Yes, that is a wonderful juxtaposition of two distinct images. Very nice scene. Very photographic!

For anyone curious for a glimpse inside haiku judging.
2018 UHTS "AHA" Haiku Contest
Judges: Grant Savage and Debbie Strange
Commentary: Debbie Strange
Thank you to the UHTS for inviting us to judge the 2018 Annual Hortensia Anderson Memorial Awards, and to the entrants who entrusted us with their work. We offer our warm congratulations to the winners!
First Place - Jay Friedenberg, United States
counting the dead what is it that makes a number irrational?
This poignant poem remained on our short lists throughout the judging process. The first line immediately evokes a powerful sense of doom, without revealing whether the deaths are orchestrated or accidental. The writer is to be commended for their innovative wordplay, linking the mathematical idea of irrational numbers to the statistics of human loss. Readers are left to ponder a question for which there is no straightforward answer.
Second Place - Precious Oboh, Nigeria
a small town of jagged smiles- pumpkin moon
The first two lines impart an air of mystery as to where the poem will take the reader. The final line adeptly transforms the work, giving it a quirky charm that is appealing in its honest simplicity.
Third Place - Brad Bennett, United States
in the midst of orioles May
This exuberant poem is enhanced by its resemblance to the shape of a tree. The artful use of the zoom-out technique encourages readers to look beyond the foreground and see the bigger picture.
Honourable Mentions (in alphabetical order)
Angela Terry, United States
autumn haze... choosing which memories to keep
There is an intentional vagueness to this poem, allowing us to reflect on all the ways we let the past define the present.
David He, China
reeds bending in opposite ways- we talk of divorce
芦苇弯弯
相向而立
犹如吾等
提及离婚
The graceful opening image of this poem skilfully lulls the reader before the closing line delivers its harsh reality.
Jessica Malone Latham, United States
season's end the things we sow but don't harvest
Regret is keenly evident in this poem, reminding readers that we are responsible for the consequences of our decisions.
Julie Warther, United States
moon gardening the first blooms of insomnia
This poem has been deftly crafted, enticing us to delve more deeply in order to reveal other layers of interpretation.
Lorin Ford, Australia
my family in Kodak monochrome ghost moon
Faded photographs conjure memories that can haunt or heal. This poem uses the double meaning of "ghost" to great effect.
