Yeah, I think different people mean different things when they say 'person'. So, do you think that who you are is tied to self-image and identity? Or do you not go down that road? (The 'who am I?' road.) Sure, who I am as a lot to do with image and identity. To me, image is what's projected outward to other people and has a lot to do with their filters. Some see me as funny, others think I have no sense of humor and am boring. Hehe. For every adjective, I could probably come up with an opposing one. So if who I am is all that, it would pretty much be everything. What do you mean by identity?

Is having solved the cigarette man koan something to be proud of? Is the Sage above the rest, or just separate, and separate in what sense? No. In fact it is an opposite quality that makes the solution obvious. The only difference between a Sage and anyone else is the fact that the Sage made it through the mental barrier while the others remain there yet. While it's true that not everything written here is a statement of personal truth not everything is an argument either. Nor is every quibbler a cigarette man, and people are as unique as snowflakes. Even the cigarrette man has a story to tell. The opportunities to speak a personal truth such that it has a chance of being heard are few and far between but they do arise if one remains attentive to the conversation.

So if who I am is all that, it would pretty much be everything. :o What do you mean by identity? I'm pretty sure that you actually have self-image, and see yourself in a way. I think all people do, even the no-selfers. It's not a simple thing, it's multifaceted, and it's not a rigid image, it's temporally changing. It was recently, for example, I was telling a friend that I'm not a really strong person like independent, self assured and confident, and she said that I have strengths and I have weaknesses, which is actually correct. Within that imagery is a measure of esteem, and being a balanced mix of strengths and weaknesses is a healthier self image that an image that lacks strength. Belief is all mixed up in that too... so when it comes to identity, that's who I believe I am... but that belief is formed by everything that ever happened to me, and every thought I ever had, and it's not something I just make up... I mean we do have to live with our past and be what it made us into.

Something can be learned from every situation. But I would say that the last sentence is a bit too prescriptive. Presence is the ultimate arbiter as to where it is wise to put ones attention...and where it is not.

Was it joke? - wow, that musta went right over my head. It wasn't a joke. TRF thinks because we talk about person-type stuff it means we don't understand that we're not 'persons'. When he gets into mantra mode, which seems to be pretty much continuous these days, he's off in own little world until it runs it's course.

Well, it was conditional , and if it suggests the idea that someone would want the opportunity then that's a bit misleading because of course .. they just happen.
