I have been wondering how come most spouses of enlightened people never seem to get enlightened. It would seem that being at such close proximity and having sexual intercourse the spouse would get enlightened. So I have come up with the following possibilities:
a) The spouse doesn't really trust the enlightened mate (so really the spouse doesn't love the enlightened mate). b) The enlightened mate doesn't express virtues the unenlightened spouse would reconize as being an enlightened person. c) The spouse is totally contented. d) The enlightened person doesn't trust the spouse. e) All the above.
I had more reasons but can't think of them at the moment.

yes. but why is there an imaginary gate, which seems to become more impenetrable the harder you push? What imaginary gate? You mean the gate a person thinks they need to walk through in order to "get there" (enlightenment)?. A person thinks its a process of walking forward to get there, but in reality its a stopping of walking forward, where the "walking forward" is process of identifying with the stories we tell about ourselves and the world. In order to break the identification, the story has to be seen as a work of fiction. Simply repressing the story-telling when the story has been bought into doesn't work. There are many ways to get to the point of authentically dropping the story: - Love of Truth - Getting sick of telling the story - Seeing what is being fed by telling the story. - Feeling constrained by the story. (like a skin that is ready to be shed)

Behind every enlightened married person is their spouse rolling his or her eyes.

Omg, what a weird thread. Must be a personal problem. That's pretty much what I figgr. If enlightenment were a contagious disease, the idea would make sense.

Some do, BTW. The counterargument to chastising Buddha, for example, for abandoning his family to stare at his navel, is that he returned and liberated all of them and more. There are lots of spouse teacher combos running around. Also, there's the issue of someone losing their personhood and then their marriage and then hooking up with someone more inclined to be married to a nonperson. But to answer your Q, karma/conditioning.

Behind every enlightened married person is their spouse rolling his or her eyes. Exactly. And a mother patting her little boy on the head.

Maybe the person only thinks they're enlightened.

Maybe the person only thinks they're enlightened. That's guaranteed.

Maybe the person only thinks they're enlightened. That's the point. If anyone is thinking they're enlightened, they need to be surrounded with people that are going to tell they are not.

The spouse is on a different karmic path . He/she will reincarnate again then become enlightened .
