YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SQ, is that one new to you? That's the quote that first directed my attention toward Niz. Yes, it's new, all I know of Niz I've read here since I joined this forum. Never heard of him before that. Although, Steve was talking yesterday about thumb and forefinger here: spiritualteachers.proboards.com/post/137576/thread

Greetings.. seeker: I find it hard to grasp what exactly you mean by saying that you are neither the object nor the subject. At this very moment, as we talk, am I not the object of your experience, and you the subject? Niz: Look -- my thumb touches my forefinger. Both touch and are touched. When my attention is on the thumb, the thumb is the feeler and the forefinger -- the self. Shift the focus of attention and the relationship is reversed. I find that somehow, by shifting the focus of attention, I become the very thing I look at and experience the kind of consciousness it has; I become the inner witness of the thing. I call this capacity of entering other focal points of consciousness 'love'; you may give it any name you like. Love says, 'I am everything.' Wisdom says 'I am nothing.' Between the two my life flows. Since at any point of time and space I can be both the subject and the object of experience, I express it by saying that I am both, and neither, and beyond both. (Chapter 57, paragraphs 14 and 15 of "I AM THAT", "Beyond Mind, There is No Suffering") "Look", that's all.. just 'look', with unconditional sincerity, just 'look'.. the story that follows 'Look', is minding and belief 'about' what is seen.. IF you are just looking, intently curious about what is actually happening, there is no time for beliefs and stories, because 'what is actually happening' IS actually happening, and.. the time spent crafting beliefs and stories is detached from 'that' which is actually 'happening'.. minding and imagining beliefs 'about' oneness, manyness, duality, non-duality, and the other distortions of what 'is', is the trap that entices the competitions between those that try to be more empty, more Samadhi, more clever, more wordy, just plain 'more' than someone else.. Notice the Quote of Niz's.. he begins with the necessary, "Look".. then, he starts abstracting the 'experience' into thoughts and beliefs.. then, others begin analyzing what Niz believes about what 'he' saw, and it ends-up in a big mind-fest.. One of my most effective teachers spoke almost no English, and i spoke even less Japanese, but he taught me Chen Style Taiji forms with a nearly wordless series of classes.. gestures, nods, shakes, smiles, frowns, thumps, and abundant laughter bridged the language barriers.. the best lessons are descriptions of what is 'seen', not what you 'think about' what is seen.. I was hiking with some friends in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, we were not far from camp and returning from a day-hike to some rock cliffs.. as we were beginning to descend toward the camp we rounded a sharp turn on the trail that revealed the sun setting through a foggy mist over the valley, the scene held us transfixed in a slow-motion kaleidoscope of color and texture and there was an interval where we stood in awe-struck silence, witnesses to a celestial event that united us with and as the experience itself.. in failing light we followed the trail back to camp in silence.. we rekindled the campfire in silence, preparing the evenings meal with a still fresh sacred reverence for being present, alive, real.. later, around the campfire as we began to look at each other, we could only smile or laugh, and we turned-in for the evening without speaking of the 'interval'.. early the next morning i was making coffee and Walt sat down across from me, across the campfire, and he said, "that was the most real thing that has ever happened to me".. we both started laughing, and i said, "wait till you taste this coffee".. it was actually years later before we could actually speak of the 'interval transfixed', and even then the words trailed off into genuine smiles or soft awe-inspired exclamations.. Life is simple, it really is.. rather than burdening that simplicity with mind-stuff, let the 'stuff' go and take time to just be present for living Life.. if we can find the clarity to 'see' what is actually happening right here, right now, in this physical experience, then.. we can 'feel' the interconnectedness of all that 'is' as it is happening.. 'we' as parts of the 'whole' happening, can feel and commune across the whole interconnected experience, we can interact in real-time, in harmony with a holistically evolving self-awareness.. Regardless of what is happening, that happening is experienced through the unique perspective of individualized and independently functioning versions of the whole, hence the different understandings of the same 'happening'.. it is through the interconnected and interactive experiences of the parts, that the whole transcends and is greater than the sum of those parts.. Apologies for the rambling, it just 'happened'.. Be well..

Like the poster named Tzu..... It amazes me that you can write stuff like that mountain walk post and then not see the irony of what you say about how everyone else has ideas and beliefs about what is and you do not some how. Cracks me up.

Apologizing to yourself... Such an odd behavior. I'm not apologizing to 'myself'.. odd that 'you' would notice a difference, where you believe there is none.. Be well.. Apologies are responses to offending someone. As no one had expressed offense at the length of your post, the only person you could have offended was yourself and your own sensibilities. I'm merely remarking on the thought rendered from reading the words indicated as supposedly coming from this "Tzujanli" character, which I imagine and pretend Tzujanli exists as a person separate and independent of my experiences of him. It's a functional assumption, but functionality is not evidence of truth. It is just a working mental model that is absent when the mind is still.

That's one function of an apology,, similarly i can post a 'text wall' that people avoid simply due to volume, and they are not offended.. the apology is to those that will miss the opportunity for communication.. as for 'you', Top, separate from those that won't read the post and separate from 'Tzu' the author of the post.. thanks for reading.. "Functionality is not evidence of truth", no it isn't.. "functionality" is what is actually happening, "truth" is a stagnant and arbitrary set of personal values.. Be well..

For those that skipped your post, likely skipped your apology as well. All I'm pointing out is that the apology is more for yourself than anyone else. Functionality is not what is actually happening. Newtonian mechanics is functional, but not what is actually happening. Electrons, protons and neutrons are functional for all of chemistry, but that abstraction layer is not what is actually happening. It's functional to not engage in promiscuity because you believe it is a sin in the eyes of God, but God's wrath is not the reason the promiscuous catch STDs. Life is full of highly functional superstitious beliefs which have no connection to what is actually happening.
