The book BackRX (yoga/pilates based therapy) gave the wife great relief. Acupuncture gave me great relief, but good ones are hard to find.
When my back is injured, I stay mobile, walk, move, etc. Even shifting weight back and forth or side to side slightly while sitting upright helps me Pain is not the enemy. It's an indicator. Stay positive. The body is remarkable.
Yoga probably works similarly due to the stretching it requires. I once ripped a calf muscle while climbing a steep trail, and I was on crutches for several weeks. I have a relative who's a PT and he told me that the only thing one can do to prevent re-ripping the scar tissue and re-injuring the leg is to stretch the calf muscles. I do that almost every day and that seems to keep the legs in good shape.
It probably goes without saying, but as one ages, muscles and tendons are much more susceptible to tears, so one has to pay a bit more attention to how one exercises. These days I do a lot more lighter-weight repetitions in the gym rather than fewer reps with heavier weights.
Sometimes the condition can be so acute that temporary immobility is the only option. Ever hear the clack of two vertebrae? . Child pose is excellent for reversing a slipped disk, but, of course, that's only one particular condition that can lead to back pain. And yes, seems to me that walking as soon as possible is probably the best advice in almost all cases.
