he stands by her gravestone
collar turned up against the cold
it's windy here beneath the shadow
of that giant cross...
must stand fifty feet high
outside the highway teems with cars
driving home to families or to no one
his tears fall at will
he doesn't wipe them away
staring through blurry eyes
at the photo on the stone
she, in the midst of her disease
smiling a thousand watt smile
she could sure light up a room
or a life...
beyond the fence

sick thoughts
cancer has become so commonplace
that I fully expect it to happen eventually
and when it does to say, 'so it's my turn'
not to sound glib, I do know the deal
from beginning to end...
and if it doesn't happen, fine
but if it does, I'll be ready
armed with all the grace and dignity
my wife displayed...
and even if I mustered up one-tenth
of her strength...
I do believe I'd be okay
we don't choose everything that happens to us
in this life but we can embrace them
for what it's worth...

thanks glimmer... my heart is full of love and that is directly because of her... I was inspired to write this by something I read... wasn't feeling particularly sad or lonely but once I started writing I fell into the feel and emotion of the piece... it was an experience to be sure

I was inspired to write this by something I read... wasn't feeling particularly sad or lonely but once I started writing I fell into the feel and emotion of the piece... it was an experience to be sure I like what you wrote in response too... grace, it is all grace...
