I inserted a commentary in blue based on the conceptualizations of my own experiences with Samadhi The blue bits are what I wrote, and the black bits are what Yogananda wrote. For clarification, Yogananda is using the word Spirit where I use Awareness or sometimes God.
He is also making just a touch of literary embellishment and is using the flowery language common in that era....but all in all he does a pretty good job of conceptualizing the un-conceptual to an audience wholly unfamiliar with the subject matter.

I inserted a commentary in blue based on the conceptualizations of my own experiences with Samadhi WHAT IS SAMADHI?
Through Oneness in samadhi, the dualities of human experience disappear. Everything is perceived to change into Spirit. In this state, the man in samadhi can perceive the spiritual ocean, with its waves of creation; or see the same spiritual ocean, transcendentally calm, existing without the waves of creation. In the first state of samadhi, the yogi (one who unites his soul with Spirit by right meditation) is so absorbed in Spirit that he is oblivious of the material and created universe. A somewhat similar experience on a lower plane is experienced when one is so absorbed in books or thoughts that he is unaware of what is happening around him. This state is not unconscious, for unconsciousness implies lack of awareness, both inwardly and outwardly. Such unconsciousness is easily brought about by the use of drugs, anesthetics and other outward means. The full spiritual consciousness of samadhi, however, can be attained only through the regular, continuous, right discipline of meditation, and has nothing in common with unconsciousness. The first state of samadhi, in which the yogi finds everything withdrawn and absorbed into Spirit, is called sabikalpa samadhi. The higher and greater state of samadhi is nirbikalpa, in which the yogi, after realizing the Spirit alone – without creation – perceives it also, simultaneously, both as above creation, and as manifested in all creation. For continuity, here is the post I made the other day, for a more modern conceptualization of the experience:
Most of you know from past posts that I have been working toward a constant state of relative samadhi.
The main practice that I used is to focus on an object or experience with so much alertness and concentration that one merges into the object or experience and disappears, or becomes one with the object or experience.
The actual experience of this is too profound to actually communicate with words, but I can best say it as its an immense alert awareness, immense beyond communicability.
If one uses a bowl to focus their alert concentrated attention upon, one merges with and disappears into being the bowl etc.
I used this process to continouosly concentrate on whatever sensory experience that caught my eye or ear, constantly shifting the point of attention to whatever I encountered througout the day in such a way that "I" was not there almost continously all day long.
Recently I started keeping my concentrated attention on only two things: Universal Sound, and My own Self....my "me-ness".
Much as Niz described it, I kept absolute and concentrated attention on ME.
And, just as with the bowl, I became one with ME.
I know that might sound absurd, but the phenomena is like this:
When you observe an object like a bowl with complete and alert concentration for long enough, the first thing that happens is that the act of observing disappears...there is no more action or doing, only the stillness of observer and observed.
With still more concentration and alertness the observer disappears into the bowl and you kinda become the bowl with no self, only bowl-ness occuring. (That last bit has to be experienced to understand what I mean). There is a profound vastness, aliveness, awakeness, in this "no self bowl experience".
What happened when I centered the same kind of concentrated alert attention on ME, is that just as with the bowl, the observer of ME disappears and merges with the observed experience.
and just as with the bowl, there is a vast alertness....when one the observer disappears into the self, its as if all of existance is merged with.....
Your center of awareness is your "Self"...your individuation is the center of your sensory and thought universe. When you merge with your self, you disapear and merge into all of everything. THE ALIVENESS IS UTTER AND PROFOUND LOL
At the risk of sounding a bit looney to some of you, I can only conceptualize it by saying that it feels like being God.

The domain of his consciousness now extends from his body to include the whole universe. He becomes the Ocean of Spirit, and watches the bubble of his body floating in it. His consciousness perceives all motion and change of life, from the circling of the stars to the fall of a sparrow and the whirling of the smallest electron. The yogi who has entered into these two states of samadhi finds that solids melt into liquids, liquids into gaseous states, these into energy, and energy into cosmic consciousness. This is a flowery way of saying that everything just IS in Samadhi, with no distinction between forms and Consciousness. He lifts the four veils of solids, liquids, gases and energy, and finds the Spirit, face to face. He sees the objective universe and subjective universe meet in Spirit. Observer and Observed become one, and there is only ISNESS, which is God His expanded material self By expanded "material self" the experience is that your body is a kind of undifferentiated oneness with the whole material world, and its all one whole that is you without any sense of an individuated self mixes with the greater spiritual Self and knows their unity. In Samadhi there is no separation between God or Awareness and any apparent material object or happening The spiritual Self, being the first cause, and capable of existing without material manifestation, is therefore greater than the material self. Thus, the negative conception of God is removed. The yogi, instead of finding cessation of life and joy, becomes the fountain-head of eternal bliss and life. The tiny bubble of laughter becomes the sea of mirth itself. By knowing God, one does not lose anything, but gains everything. - Paramahansa Yogananda For clarification, Yogananda is using the word Spirit where I use Awareness or sometimes God.

Sigh I thought it might be nice to add a description from a modern day first hand experience next to a guys commentary from last century....I didn't have to take the time to write that, and I wasn't giving you a TMT hypothesis or theory... Your being quite rude actually, and passively confrontational, for no apparent reason....and so....I'll take my leave...

Your being quite rude actually, and passively confrontational, for no apparent reason....and so....I'll take my leave... Why are you so invested in this samadhi stuff? Why are you so eager to share it? This all looks very immature. Just look into your last 10 posts, you go and attack everyone who isn't buying your story. I suggest you let this samadhi stuff sink in for a while, get your vocabulary straight and then report back. You sound like a little kid that has a brand new toy and is angry at everyone who isn't appreciating that new toy like he does. Edit: Okay, so now you've deleted your account again? There's really no consistency anywhere.

Question : What is samadhi? Ramana Maharshi : The state in which the unbroken experience of existence-consciousness is attained by the still mind, alone is samadhi. That still mind which is adorned with the attainment of the limitless supreme Self, alone is the reality of God.
When the mind is in communion with the Self in darkness, it is called nidra [sleep], that is, the immersion of the mind in ignorance. Immersion in a conscious or wakeful state is called samadhi. Samadhi is continuous inherence in the Self in a waking state. Nidra or sleep is also inherence in the Self but in an unconscious state. In sahaja samadhi the communion is con-tinuous.
Question : What are kevala nirvikalpa samadhi and sahaja nirvikalpa samadhi? Ramana Maharshi :The immersion of the mind in the Self, but without its destruction, is kevala nirvikalpa samadhi. In this state one is not free from vasanas and so one does not therefore attain mukti. Only after the vasanas have been destroyed can one attain liberation.
Question : When can one practise sahaja samadhi? Ramana Maharshi : Even from the beginning. Even though one practises kevala nirvikalpa samadhi for years together, if one has not rooted out the vasanas one will not attain liberation.
Question : May I have a clear idea of the difference between savikalpa and nirvikalpa? Ramana Maharshi : Holding on to the supreme state is samadhi. When it is with effort due to mental disturbances, it is savikalpa. When these disturbances are absent, it is nirvikalpa. Remaining permanently in the primal state without effort is sahaja.
Question : Is nirvikalpa samadhi absolutely necessary before the attainment of sahaja? Ramana Maharshi : Abiding permanently in any of these samadhis, either savikalpa or nirvikatpa, is sahaja [the natural state]. What is body-consciousness? It is the insentient body plus consciousness. Both of these must lie in another consciousness which is absolute and unaffected and which remains as it always is, with or without the body-consciousness. What does it then matter whether the body-consciousness is lost or retained, provided one is holding on to that pure consciousness? Total absence of body-consciousness has the advantage of making the samadhi more intense, although it makes no difference to the knowledge of the supreme.

Reefs, don't you think its a little childish to name the thread "Samadhi Junkies", instead of just Samadhi?
By doing so you indicate your lack intent to learn or understand, and instead to prove, refute, and disdain.
Which in turn, makes the conversation pointless....
I don't know why anyone would want to engage you in conversations when you take that approach, unless they just felt like being argumentative and contentious....which I don't.

And I am a little partial to a deactivation or two myself. Though to be deleting and recreating accounts, like this is what truly integrated folks do, is beyond me.

Instead of self dissolving, it appears to be replicating. It's some kind of funny forum glitch. It usually doesn't show deleted or invisible accounts. He really had 4 different accounts in the last 24 hours. This incident also shows us the power of a pure desire in deliberate creation. I was just wondering with a still mind how many accounts Steve was using in the last 24 hours. That was all. There was no need to know involved. That has all been released before I even logged in here today in total peace. There was just absolute faith in the infinite possibilities of answers the vast and mostly impersonal intelligence of the universal Mind could deliver. And just look, with how much ease and humor the universe delivered the correct answer almost immediately in a very personal way.

He usually deletes his accounts when he is upset. Sometimes he just comes back to add a couple of pot shots and then is gone again. But mostly he stays a little longer and has something on topic to say. It seems he's trying a fresh start with every new account. Very split-mindish. </sigmundy>
