Sometimes when I look at the boards, I think "What have I done?" I notice with a mix of amusement and disappointment the number of posts on the different forums: - Only 380 posts in the "spiritual friends" board (which was the original purpose of this site)
- 125,000 "general spiritual discussion" posts
- Nearly 8500 "unmoderated discussion" posts (a board started only a few weeks ago and which has become an ego-parading penisfight)
- 4000 posts about "spiritual teachers"
I suppose my original intent of helping people to meet face-to-face with others has been supplanted by technology such as Meetup, so in that respect I shouldn't be surprised. And I was very happy to meet a couple of people at a recent TAT meeting who are members of this site... so perhaps there are a few meetings that have materialized from this place. Maybe it's not so bad.... Is there value here, or are most people just killing time with intellectual cleverness? Are people questioning themselves, or bolstering their opinions on the backs of others? BTW, I'm considering adding the phrases "there is no one to get enlightened," "there is no enlightenment," "you are already enlightened" and "there is nothing to do" to the list of banned words. Time to take another peek-in to see whats happening inside your heart?

I suggest replacing "There is no one to get enlightened" with "You're phucked", and "There is nothing to do" with "STFU".

Awesome questions Shawn. And sadly, yes, it is a high percentage of time killing bolstering.

Where teachers raise seekers consciousness through their own empty presence and/or by shifting the groups attention away from person-hood to one of presence itself. That atmosphere of non-conceptual, feeling and knowing, can't be reproduced on an electronic medium such as a forum or blog. So as you have have correctly stated, forums are about putting time wasting effort in front of folks seeking the timeless.

Apparently settling in the pristine waters of unattached clarity, coming empty to This, leads to a natural compassion. That natural compassion informs the mind in such a way as a natural verbal helping hand to liberate even highly spiritually evolved mind bodies from the remaining shackles of mind-generated existential suffering. Of course unattached naturally arising compassion from the TPTPAU may arrive in styles unsuspected to the unevolved mind who's perspective is yet bound within the narrow confines of social conditioning. Perhaps the enlightened garrulousness keeps out the newbie, actually questioning themselves? Maybe we should start up a sister forum called 'Spiritual Morons'? Once you've graduated from that site you can come here to 'Spiritual Teachers' and burn off intellectual cleverness and opinion bolstering? And once graduating from here perhaps go straight to 'virtual padded room' where you get your own forum for your own mega thread discussions?

"Is there value here, or are most people just killing time with intellectual cleverness?" (Shawn)
I thought about the time when I was not a member. I used to read ZD's posts mostly (and I was a bit sad about not hearing koan-talk openly), watch short videos linked here of Mooji/ Adya/ etc, and if anything sounded curious (like 'headless way') I would search it on the net... also reading a bit of personal experiences and poetry was good. These things were valuable for me, I don't remember following lengthy conversations... Now (after being a member) even though I don't write much it's a bit different. But here I just wanted to state the lurker side because I still remember it.

What's different now that you're a member?

Only if you want to. I'm just curious. When you mentioned personal stories experiences, it made me notice that we don't see much of that anymore. (Then you posted in the other thread and I saw you're doing it. Yay!)

What's different now that you're a member? Most members have certain positions regarding various subjects and it looks like it is better to remember this, if I wish to interact. And reading the mega thread takes a lot of time! Now I don't have the mind I used to have in my first weeks here and I can't concentrate solely on what I find most interesting. But I am not complaining, this may change.
