I wonder how many have seen this video?
What did you think of it?
I like it more each time I view it. I particularly find the personal stories of the three gentlemen interviewed quite valuable.
There were common elements in their path to the final answer.
In general it seems that their paths all had an extended period of self examination, struggles with practice, periods of giving up or not knowing what to do, and a recommitment of intent or earnestness, followed by a rather gentle awakening and a very content realization of who they really are.
Contrast this with those who have had an awakening and then many difficulties with what was realized. The part that thinks it is so awful has to be none other than the ego hanging on and trying to maintain control ...... (of what? the attention....but that is another matter) ....
Looking at these side by side suggests that as a seeker you may be better off doing your inner work in earnestness, pulling the weeds from the garden completely by the root, right now, hopefully before awakening.
It leads me to think that the best teachers are those that would help you work on your stuff, right here, right now.
Since this is my thinking, the best teaching or path for me, right now, is the path of self-inquiry. Indeed I have found that identifying a pattern, seeing its components and how it works, allows me to recognize it when it arises, and then this recognition (or seeing through) allows it to be dropped, so that it does not capture the attention.
This work takes seriousness or earnestness, effort, and commitment of time and energy.
I have also been experiencing that new "attention grabbers" will arise with more vigor after some significant space has been cleared through this inquiry. It is like there is a force whose purpose is to distract one from doing the work of self discovery. The content really doesn't matter, could be worry, fear, seduction into some form of pleasure seeking like sex, drinking, thrill seeking of some kind.....its purpose seems to be to divert the attention from the true self. It will throw anything at you try and accomplish this.
One of the worst forms of this, or the most distressing to me lately has been this tendency to think I need to look for something outside, some new teaching, something more, when I have been abiding for a while. This one still gets me DAMN IT! LOL
When I have found the peace I am looking for and abide as the true self, the false self dangles the seekers creed in front of me, "but there is more, you need to look for more....."
Well it isn't true, it just captures the attention pulling it into some ego directed search for more. It is grasping. It becomes painful, and that is the signal....something is out of whak....better look at it......
What techniques can you use at this point?
non-resistance, just looking at it from a higher point of view, the ole observer role creates space
bring the attention into the present moment
all the ego action seems to disolve when the attention is fully in the present
I guess it comes down to becoming unfooled....didn't Bart Marshall say that...LOL .... I like it....
peace brothere and sisters....
