Not the ordinary doubt the self has in it's day to day existence but the doubt of it's very existence as well as the universe it lives in. Where the ground of the self's being and all beings is pulled out from under leaving no ground to stand on.
Self consciousness of which the ego is a reflection then becomes the Great Doubt, it no longer has doubt but is the Great Doubt, it becomes the question.
It is at this point we see reality from a viewpoint outside of self consciousness-ego.
This is what in zen is known as the Great Doubt.
