Hi
To the people on this forum what do you think about the history of non-dualism.
Did non-dualism originate in the east with adviata and buddhism? What about non-dualism before then?
If you could give some information that would be great. Thanks.

NonDuality came from the east.
Monism from the west.
Then later dualism came.

to have non-duality in the east through that statement one implies duality. they are two sides of the same coin. don't mean to be a stickler but there i go.

Cabin: Various people in all cultures have experienced non-duality, but it may not have been called that. The oldest recorded spiritual writing in the world, if I remember correctly, is the Rig Veda (pre-dating Buddhism by several thousand years), and the first line of that writing says, "the wise will surrender speech in mind," and goes on to spell out a path of non-duality. Probably the recognition of non-duality occurred as early as the appearance of Homo sapiens.
Advaita may be the first formal teaching methodology pointing to the possibility of continued wakefullness. Remember, lots of people have had experiences of cosmic consciousness, but very few (until recently) have learned how to live on a daily basis and retain that kind of awareness and understanding.
Today, two things are happening. First, non-duality is moving beyond all religious traditions and a large number of teachers no longer identify their teaching with any specific religion or tradition. Second, due to the internet and forums like this, more and more people are waking up to THAT.

OT: It's interesting that the internet and the electromechanical support structure that makes that happen is the extension of the human nervous system. The human machine is amazing.
