Jean: I, too, listen to no music. I like jazz, Frank Sinatra classics, Big Band stuff, Gershwin, classical stuff, and much more, but I live in a rural area, and all we have is country music and raucous rock. Given my options I would rather listen to the sounds of the natural world. LOL.

So you listen to nothing now? Nothing at all? I only listen to it when my boyfriend turns some on, or when like last night we went to an organ concerto. But he dragged me to it, I would have chosen no music at all; I just wanted to be with him. Even though I like modern rock better than classical type music, given the option now, I'd rather have classical music on as it's harder to get stuck in my head. But I'd rather be bored, and deal with that. (though I still find myself aimlessly checking email, checking for updated iPhone apps, checking this forum, etc. so don't get me wrong here) Lastly, I'm not saying this necessarily should apply to all, but for me, I'd rather just have silence in the background.

depnds on the music genre. i recommened ambient music. You say listen to nature i agree but in ambient music you can get for example a cd with just 40 minutes of a waterfall or birds in a rainforest. Obviously to experience it personally is much better but the money is a problem.
that is fair play just the reason i ask is, some people claim to have spiritual experiences when they have listened to music.
chanting is music.. i heard that it is recommened for a spiritual activity. monks etc

The app store has a lot of free apps with ambient-new age music. I actually use an app when I sleep that produces a storm sound with random elements. But I wouldn't call it music myself.
BTW, spiritual experiences can help I think, but they themselves are not my goal. My goal is beyond experience.

I've been frantically looking for pleasant experiences to fill the hole in my life ever since I could remember. When I started seeking, I replaced looking for material pleasure for "spiritual" pleasure. I've seen for a while now that it is simply more of the same.
And I can see that I still am looking for pleasant experiences, but it is like a bad habit I am trying to shake.
Why do you listen to music? Have you tried not to just as a test and see what feelings come up?

Maybe it's just me, but in general I find it very hard to do or enjoy art that has some kind of an unerlying agenda, be it spiritual, political, commercial etc. I've been an art student for 7 years, finished my diploma this year. When I started out I couldn't enjoy a child's drawing and I didn't notice how beautiful a bird's song is. Now, although I still appreciate the mastery of the great painters, sculptors, poets and musicians, what is too often apparent to me is how much their work struggles, it often perspires, as Nietzsche would say, it's rarely innocent. On the other hand, when a bird sings, it has absolutely no higher agenda, it's completely innocent and I find it very liberating and moving, I can finally breathe again. How is it possible to do such beauty for no reason whatsoever? It blows my mind, I wish I could do that. But not all art is boring of course. I admire a lot of artists, but mostly those who just do their thing without a care for financial success or failure. Heart is essential. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jreEzsF0AYY

beyond experience what do u mean by that Jean: Experience requires an experiencer. The path of non-duality leads to something that is prior to experience. It is what all experience occurs within. It is the one thing that never changes. From that vantagepoint nothing is happening and nothing has ever happened. Karen is interested in what remains after "Karen" disappears. Personally, I like art, architecture, music, poetry, etc, but it is hard to improve upon the natural world. Being in nature, alone, is the third most frequently reported preceder of mystical experiences. If you just wanted to play the odds, walking in the mountains, or along a seashore, or through the woods in silence is more likely to precipitate a spiritual experience than anything other than meditation.

I say 'on and off' because the poetry writes itself, effortlessly and unmediated and without purpose. You say "I wish I could do that". Is it possible that's why it doesn't happen? Elton Jon's 'Bitter Fingers' came to mind as I read your post.

Agreed. Ive been making art off and on for 25 years and it is definitely something that seems to come through me not from me. I suppose thats why I dont involve myself in the art world. re: music The radio sometimes plays classical or jazz but Ive stopped listening to my ipod altogether. However, I still have a soft spot for Patti Smith Maybe it's just me, but in general I find it very hard to do or enjoy art that has some kind of an unerlying agenda, be it spiritual, political, commercial etc. I've been an art student for 7 years, finished my diploma this year. I'm a big fan of independent rock. Some of my favorite bands as of late are (in no particular order): Tegan & Sara Metric Owl City Ok Go Julian Casablancas The White Stripes The Bravery The Shins The Hives Against Me Takover UK The Silversun Pickups
I have a little recording studio in my house, so I've actually been in the process of writing and producing my own stuff. It's very time consuming, but I'm writing stuff right now that is closer to the kind of sound/style I want than I ever have before. So it's all very inspiring.
