Didn't want to pollute the Enigma thread, but Sri Yukteswar in The Holy Science tells us specifically why it's better the human body not eat meat. Genesis tells us the same (not why). Cows tell us the same (not why).

Cows tell us the same (not why). You can consume any food, but only when you feel hungry. This way, you’re less likely to fall ill. This is because it leads to the production of good glucose, which your pancreas effectively approves it by setting insulin in it. As a result, the glucose is properly absorbed by your cells.

I read The Holy Science in my '20s, after finding out about it from Autobiography of a Yogi. In it he says that meat-eaters have a short digestive system, so meat will not rot during the process of digestion. He says human beings have a long digestive system, which herbivores have. From my experimenting, eating, this is definitely true. Meat will stay in my system 3-5 days, plant-based, one to two days. (I know this from experimental fasting, it can take up to five days to completely empty the system). Not to get indelicate, but plant-based stools, very light color, with meat, the *normal*, very dark. But, to each his own. Also from experience, one can break the craving for meat. And it's easier to get your protein, eating meat, about the size of your palm, is the needed protein for a day. Anything more, is used as fuel. Getting enough protein from plant-based (plus eggs, cheese/milk products, etc.), takes more 'calculating'. I've never read what Sri Yukteswar says, anywhere else, but the length comparison should be able to be easily verified. If you can't give up red meat, grassfed is much better, or game. Small fish is the best/healthiest meat source of protein. Also learned from fasting, the first full day is the hardest, after that your hunger actually goes away. Virtually anybody can do 3 & 1/2 days fasting (disclaimer, "consult" your doctor). Doing more than 3 & 1/2 days, you need to do some research. But Gopal is correct, if you eat only when hungry, you will maintain a proper weight.

Small fish is the best/healthiest meat source of protein. My discussion wasn’t centered around the choice of food, but rather the timing of consumption. The crucial factor here is hunger. If you eat when you’re truly hungry, your body has the ability to digest virtually anything.
