A moment ago, when you talked about the eternal present and the unreality of past and future, I found myself looking at that tree outside the window. I had looked at it a few times before, but this time it was different. The external perceptions had not changed much, except that the colors seemed brighter and more vibrant. But there was now an added dimension to it. This is hard ot explain. I don't know how, but I was aware of something invisible that I felt was the essence of that tree, its inner spirit, if you like. And somehow I was part of that. I realize now that I hadn't truly seen the tree before, just a flat and dead image of it. When I look at the tree now, some of that awareness is still present, but I can feel it slipping away. You see, the experience is already receding into the past. Can something like this ever be more than a fleeting glimpse?
You were free of time for a moment. You moved into the Now and therefore perceived the tree without the screen of mind. The awareness of Being became part of your perception. With the timeless dimension comes a different kind of knowing, one that does not "kill" the spirit that lives within every creature and every thing. A knowing that does not destroy the sacredness and mystery of life but contains a deep love and reverence for all that is. A knowing of which the mind knows nothing.
Tolle, "The Power of Now", chap 3 para 26

If a man speaks his mind in a forest, and no woman hears him, is he still wrong?

“Unruly beings are as unlimited as space They cannot possibly all be overcome, But if I overcome thoughts of anger alone This will be equivalent to vanquishing all foes.
Where would I possibly find enough leather With which to cover the surface of the earth? But (wearing) leather just on the soles of my shoes Is equivalent to covering the earth with it.
Likewise it is not possible for me To restrain the external course of things; But should I restrain this mind of mine? What would be the need to restrain all else?”

"If you don't find the right quote to reply to someone who quoted someone to make a point you don't agree with, just say, "...we doctors recognize the hopeless case."...."

"If you don't find the right quote to reply to someone who quoted someone to make a point you don't agree with, just say, "...we doctors recognize the hopeless case."...." (Me, the polar bear who likes asian food.) Like the world needs more ignorant folk who only have the ability to fire off witty one liners designed to denigrate the other. It may make the person feel good about themself as compensation for not having an intellegent counter argument, but it's a shallow and short lived sensation that doesn't address the topic being discussed or resolve the person's problem of lack. It's what children do when they can't win or get what they want, they lash out at the other they perceive as the enemy or thewy don't like or is the hindrance to their needs or desires. "To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one's self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded." - Bessie Anderson Stanley "Knowing a great deal is not the same as being smart; intelligence is not information alone but also judgement, the manner in which information is collected and used." - Carl Sagan "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence." - Albert Einstein "There is no discipline in the world so severe as the discipline of experience subjected to the tests of intelligent development and direction." - John Dewey "Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius, and a lot of courage, to move in the opposite direction." - Albert Einstein "Quality is never an accident, it is always the result of intelligent effort." - John Ruskin "Knowing others is intelligence, knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power." - Lao Tzu

'pity this busy monster, manunkind'
pity this busy monster, manunkind,
not. Progress is a comfortable disease: your victim (death and life safely beyond)
plays with the bigness of his littleness --- electrons deify one razorblade into a mountainrange; lenses extend unwish through curving wherewhen till unwish returns on its unself. A world of made is not a world of born --- pity poor flesh
and trees, poor stars and stones, but never this fine specimen of hypermagical
ultraomnipotence. We doctors know
a hopeless case if --- listen: there's a hell of a good universe next door; let's go
(E. E. Cummings)
