In another thread earnest inferred he is enlightened. For reasons unknown to me, when asked, he will neither deny or confirm this. Something about my probing, explorative analytical style does not sit well with him. No matter, i can adapt. So, some questions about your knowledge and\or experience of Enlightenment. What is your definition of Enlightenment? Are you enlightened? How did you achieve this? What changes to self and\or lifestyle via new abilities or state of being have you obtained from the experience? I would really like to hear of your personal knowledge and\or experiences. This thread also comes with a Mountain-Goat.Inc guarantee. No follow up comments or questions will be expressed by me. I simply desire to hear your thoughts on this matter. This is the funniest thing I've heard all day!!! (but it is only 09:15..) If I've inferred that I'm enlightened then I totes assure you it was totes by accident. I'm not claiming the big E either directly or indirectly. I'm curious about where I inferred it so you can link if you like (and that wouldn't be breaking the spirit of your promise).

I have come across enlightened beings and none of them claimed to be enlightened. I guess saying you are enlightened automatically means you are not.

I have come across enlightened beings and none of them claimed to be enlightened. I guess saying you are enlightened automatically means you are not. There are a few rare exceptions, but in general, this is true. At the age of 100 Ramesh admitted that he was enlightened only because he wanted to make the point that enlightenment gives one nothing other than peace of mind. In the Zen tradition I've never heard any Zen Master make that claim nor read about any Zen Master who has made that claim. They will talk about enlightenment experiences (kensho or cosmic consciousness experiences), but never claim to be enlightened. Sages' responses to the question, "Are you enlightened?" usually are designed to educate the questioner about the illusion that underlies the question--that a person can become enlightened. Here are three answers Zen Masters have given to that question: 1. *Spoken with disgust* "Someone should wash out your mouth with soap and water!" 2. *stares intensely into the questioner's eyes, but remains silent* 3. "Find the one who wants to know."

Although I think the word "enlightenment" carries too much baggage to be useful, I would describe what the word points to as freedom from illusions generated by the intellect (primarily the illusion of personal selfhood but also the illusions of space, time, causality, and objective boundaries), and the direct realization that the Infinite, alone, Is. How freedom from the intellect can be attained is the subject of many threads on the forum, so that subject has already been covered in detail. What life is like after becoming free of the intellect and penetrating the illusion of selfhood has also been described in several threads. Ramesh said that enlightenment results in peace of mind. Other sages have said that it results in freedom, joy, gratitude, humility, appreciation, and a sense of BEING the flow of life, rather than being an outside observer of life.
