yeah, I hear ya..... what a funny, strange thing that "nationalism" deally is eh?....... The newscaster describes a plane crash, where all sorts of folks of various nationalities perished, but it's not til they get to the "There were 14 Canadians on board, 5 of them died," that the upset in the room starts.
Taking offense-emotional manipulation.
I recall early in my self exploration journey that i would be deeply offended when i was cut off in round-a-bouts. I judged this to be an overreaction, so i examined and discovered i was taking it personally, when in further contemplation, there is no rational reason to take it personally because whomever was cutting me off did not personally know me. The other driver was simply cutting off another car, not me, and with no intention to cause any form of harm to the other driver. Once i understood this, i was no longer offended by the selfish\inconsiderate behavior of other drivers.
What was happening in the round-a-bout incidents is i was responding emotionally instead of rationally. My emotions clouded\influencing my reasoning to such a high level that my response was anger and hatred towards the other driver. The other driver is now my enemy, s\he is not a part of my tribe. I am not loyal to them.
The controlled propaganda social conditioning media subconsciously manipulates people at the emotional level,(and check out Edward Bernays), which bypasses or heavily influences the critical thinking processes.
And it seems to me that wren's first response to you is one that is based on emotions manipulated by the media.
Emotional manipulation to control behavior has been in advertising for decades, sexual desire being the #1 emotion they target.
Blimey, back in the day 90s- 2000s, when i used to watch tv, i recall an influx of ads for products that one would never associate with sex, has sexual imagery or phrases in them.
The one that really got my attention was an ad for bread. Yep, a plain old boring day to day loaf of bread, not even a continental fancy one. The ad was a single woman in her early thirties, conservatively dressed, at home with her equally conservative breed of dog. Nothing sexual in the slightest throughout the ad, just an unmarried average woman making meals in her home, with her trusted dog by her side, accompanied by a male voice-over talking about the simple joys or pleasures of bread...
...until the last few seconds, when the camera is now showing one of the rooms, living room i think, with the woman and dog off camera, and just as the voice-over guy finishes mentioning about the pleasure of bread, she utters a very sensual pleasurable remark to her dog. Yes, she was having sexual pleasure with her dog.
If you are not alert, you would not think she was doing this, or you would unconsciosuly deny what you just heard, you would think she is moaning about her delicious bread, because the ad was never taken off the air. Once i realized what the ad makers were up to, as i watched the ad again and again, i noticed the whole ad was shot in low sensual lighting, as apposed to most ads about food in a house, the house is always bright and there's a family or a bunch of friends having good times together in a meal setting.
The news(tv, radio, newspapers, magazines and websites) also manipulates at the emotional level, but not with sexual stuff. They "tug at the heart strings" with images and words of loyalty to one's country. Showing the horrendous results from what they report as the bad people, while the people of their own country are sacrificing, brave, heroic. Is it any wonder why there is a flood of super hero movies being pumped out by Hollywood since 2011. Not to mention war movies with a positive message and scenes of heroic soldiers fighting against insurmountable odds.
And if you are anti war\anti soldier, if you think there is no need for soldiers, they started introducing movies with all of humanity being attacked by aliens...so pull your head out of your a$$es you peace loving hippies, the world needs soldiers who will go into battle to save your sorry a$$es because life is a fearful place where there's always someone out there to wipe you out.
Nationalism\tribalism - dividing people against each other.
A year after my time in the psych ward, still in rehab mode, i began to volunteer at the hospital. I took care of the Oncology Dept carpark for the patients, making that part of their day as trouble free as possible. I noticed many patients and relatives\close friends having to come outside for their nicotine fix. Puffing stressfully away in order to calm down. And the policy in the hospital is to not provide ashtrays, because they do not advocate smoking.
This does not deter most people from smoking and simply makes a mess as people have no choice but to throw their butts on the ground. And as i watched the faces of the majority of the people throwing away their butts, i noticed no concern for the mess they were making. No consideration for the environment, the long term negative impact the filter has on the environment that sustains them and all living things.
And i pondered if they throw their butts on the floor of their house. And i concluded that they would not. So i reasoned that because they appear to have no trouble throwing them in the street outside the hospital, then they must perceive that the hospital grounds are not their home, it is not theirs to take care of. They are loyal only to their house and yard, and perhaps their neighborhood street.
And then i extrapolated that to nationalism, that some people do not consider people from other countries, other nationalities, as their kin, they are not related. They are from a different tribe, therefore they do not deserve the same love, respect and beneficial effort given to family members or those of one's own country.
I'm sure a soldier would not kill one of their own family members if ordered to by a superior, and many of them would not kill members of their own country, but they seem to have no trouble in killing their own kind who come from other countries.
Of course, many soldiers suffer terrible psychological damage after their service is over, and the "emotionless utterly obedient killing machine' programming they received in boot camp is put aside and their own personality returns to the fore and they are flooded with guilt, shame and remorse for the atrocities they inflicted on their fellow beings, or saw...many of them opting for suicide because they can not handle the pain.
I think it was Einstein...wait...~scans quotes database~...
"The pioneers of a warless world are the youth that refuse military service" - Albert Einstein
I hope we as a species evolve to that state soon because the "war pigs"(Black Sabbath song) are busy working towards making war - the ability to destroy(and\or control via force\bullying) others for resources and the profits from them, fully automated, no need for thousands of soldiers to go around killing others or forcing others to submit to another.
In The Terminator movies, the threat to humanity was from unfeeling machines. There is the threat of a real SkyNet, and it's also run by machines...by cold hearted humans who do not give a dingo's kidney about any people but themselves and their bloodline families.
Yet if you are emotionally manipulated, and thus your critical thinking has been compromised, you will have no problem doing their bidding, or at least supporting them.
"Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities." - Voltaire
Hitler is the go to person about this phenomena.
Many germans willingly followed Hitler because they were convinced he was the savior of their country. They did whatever he asked of them because they were convinced it was the best thing to do for their country and the world.
And many of these same people were shocked after the war to learn not only what he was actually doing, but some, knowing what he was doing, they advocated and joined in, and they were shocked to realize they were mesmerized\hypnotized\brainwashed\spellbound to be an active part of it, utterly convinced it was the right thing to do.
