From my experience attention can be placed, driven outside of the mind as a very true mindless action of consciousness.(not of mind).
I knew of a teacher who was Jean Klien teacher in India. My memory is never good with names. Anyhow his name was Atma..... He wrote a small but powerful text called the Atma-Darshan which I have. He also claimed to be able to place attention in deep sleep and was conscious in deep sleep. Jean Klien also felt this was possible. IF so then it shows us that the actual act of placing attention need not be a mind driven thingy.

I would say that because he was conscious in deep sleep he was 'awake' in such a way that enabled him to place attention. So just to be clear, Im not saying the act of placing attention is mind driven as such, I dont see attention as an attribute OF mind, Im more saying that I think placing attention happens 'through' mind i.e. attention is 'prior' to mind but minding is required in order that attention can be placed. I see it as part of being human really (and part of experiencing).
