Every day, millions of people take countless types of medication. These medications, some of which are advertised on TV, come with various side effect that can be rather serious. I can't help but notice that many of these side effects are worse than the original symptoms that they were prescribed for. For example, some antidepressant medications may cause a young person to become suicidal, while other medications cause excessive thirst, weight gain, and/or delayed orgasm. While I in no way wish to imply any negative feeling regarding the intentions of well meaning members of the medical community, and while I do understand that many medications prescribed can at times be very helpful, I simply want to remind you that we also have an innate ability to heal ourselves.
Reality is that the human body knows how to heal itself, and has been doing so for thousands of years. If you cut your finger, you don't spend time wondering whether it will ever heal. It heals by itself; that's self-healing. Everyone has this natural power, but we have to become more aware of it. We need knowledge to make the right choices in order to stimulate our own self-healing.
You have most likely heard the expressions: "mind over matter" or "heal your body through your mind." There is much research and much experiential knowledge that suggests that we can do a lot to overcome illness and pain through using our minds in a different way. This is typically done through therapies such as hypnotherapy, visualization exercises, or guided imagery.
Body-Mind Medicine
Dr. Bernie Siegel, is a physician and pioneer in the field of body-mind medicine. He is actually a surgeon who believed that he could better help his cancer patients heal and recover through taking a holistic approach. Rather than just relying on chemotherapy and radiation treatments for the physical body, he believed that addressing the physical, emotional, spiritual and mental aspects of a human being, was absolutely essential for surviving cancer or any other illness for that matter. He is the author of "Love, Medicine and Miracles" and "Peace, Love and Healing." In his bestsellers, he suggests that long-term survivors of cancer were those that paid attention and expressed their emotions, and those that dealt with the bigger issues of forgiveness and surrendering in the face of illness. These patients also took part in visualizations that were geared at destroying cancer cells.
I can just imagine how a physician like Dr. Siegel was looked at by his colleagues in the 1970's and 80's. He actually spoke about the healing power of love, and about loving his patients and his patients loving themselves. His caring approach was an inspiration for many other healers who followed in his footsteps, and he certainly advanced our understanding of how the mind and body work together.
Can the Body Heal the Mind?
Curing Depression with Spirituality
Depression, according to recent statistics, is practically an epidemic, with over 70 million people suffering from its affects, such as a feeling of moroseness, uselessness, lack of energy, inability to sleep, and a poor attitude toward life in general, among other symptoms. Depression causes a pessimistic view of things. It also discourages enthusiasm and stifles one’s initiative. It may also produce despair and bring about sickness in the mind and body,a s well as contribute to suicidal feelings. It can also make one resort to rash and thoughtless actions that a person may later regret. Much of the time such thoughts are completely unnecessary. Thus, it is imperative that we help cure depression so that people can live with more happiness, ingenuity, energy, and are thus able to reach a higher potential in life.
The reason for depression may be different for each person, and there are a variety of causes. So it must be analyzed and understood. So what can we do to help cure such an attitude, as long as it is not a biological problem?
Spiritually, there are many ways to help take care of this condition. So let us take a deeper look at this.
CAUSES OF DEPRESSION
Physical, Biological or Medical Factors 1. There are physical factors such as digestive problems, diabetes, anemia, or other diseases which cause discomfort. This will naturally cause a lackluster mental disposition. Having parasites is another biological factor that will deplete a person of their energy and well-being.
2. Sometimes the diet will also cause depression. There may be a lack of vitamins and proper nutrition. Or there may be too much of something, like sugar, which can also cause highs and lows in blood sugar levels which will certainly create changing mood shifts.
3. There is also the depression that new mothers may feel right after giving birth to a child. The hormones are often quite imbalanced at that time and a new mother may feel a multitude of changing feelings about things.
4. A weak nervous system, or overwork and tension are also causes of a depleted mental disposition. And a negative attitude itself can cause further digression in one’s outlook on life.
In spite of all the money spent on research into advanced health care, we have more disease today than after World War II. We have a medical system that is primarily geared toward disease and treating symptoms, not creating lasting health. It treats our chemical and mechanical bodies, while ignoring our mind, spirit and energy.
As I said in the opening title" physician heal thy self" the physician I was referring to is you. I ask that you get in touch with who you are, bearing in mind that you spend more time with your self than anybody else. Sadly many people live in a low state of awareness. Learn to quiet the chatter of your noisey mind through meditation techniques. Commune with your intuitive self and from that place diagnose your own ailments and if possible stop asking a pill to do what your body may be able to accomplish naturally.
Create a enviorment for healing, make time for love, meditation, tranquility ,laughter, nutricion food, drinking water, rest, exercise, sunshine and positive friends. Take time to be silly and less serious. Half of the things we worry about are beyond our control and would have fixed themselves anyway, but we make them worse by worrying about them. Stop calling things problems, how about calling them lessons or thing that need our attention. In many cases healing is haltered because we get in the way of our bodies natural healing mechinism.
