In our history there are just two men who are recorded to have attained the Supreme Enlightenment. Therefore only these two men are the truly Enlightened beings. And these men did not call themselves buddha while they are alive, they referred to themselves as Tathagata and let others call them a Tathagata. There is no evidence from any of the numbers of spiritual masters to show that the spiritual master actually attained Enlightenment. That's why their spiritual teachings cannot be very helpful to living human beings when we see the result in life. If you want to be Enlightened you have to know the exact way to Enlightenment or learn from the one who was already Enlightened. It means that to know something you should learn from the one who knows, if you don't want to know then learn from the ones who don't really know..
