Do you breathe properly? I always found it interesting when ZenDancer says that if there are any reports of CC's within the Zen Community, then they are just told to go and practice breathing techniques. There is some rich sense in this. I believe it might have been me. A Soto priest once told me to ignore mind blowers. They were distractions. Soto believes enlightenment is a gradual divestment of the trappings of separation. In Soto it seemed living, action, was more important than what came out of the mouth. Rinzai might be similar, but I don't know. All I know is they are peculiar. For Rinzai and most of his followers, the focus was quite different. In fact, I think Soto was Dogen's antithetical response to the typical Rinzai focus upon big sudden mind-blowing cc's as a way of attaining understanding. The end result is the same, but the path toward the same way of life is often quite different. Rinzai was well known for doing all sorts of outrageous things to shock students out of their minds, and teachers in the Rinzai lineage use the same approach today. It's probably a personality thing because I know people in both traditions, and the Rinzai tradition seems far more attractive to people who enjoy being flamboyant and a bit "over the top." I'm glad that I happened to find a Rinzai Zen-oriented ZM when I went looking for one because a Soto Zen-oriented ZM would have bored me to death! The gradual path and the sudden path end up in the same place, but the sudden path is so d**m much more fun! Maezumi roshi (Soto) was probably as clear as Seung Sahn (Rinzai), but having met both men, I'd much rather have a beer or a night on the town with Seung Sahn!
