On a continuum, say sleep is not being alert, what would be at the other end of the continuum? If I go to a park and I try to be alert, then the next day I notice that I didn't notice something the day before while being alert, does that mean I wasn't totally alert the previous day?

Many times we can return to the same place and see new things. Has little to do with being alert and more to do with the play of consciousness imo. Nowhereman

I find similarities between alertness and 'good listening skills'. When preconceived notions are absent, one sees and hears whats actually being seen or heard. But when the 'wheels are a spinning', you likely miss what the conversation/observation was really about.

Its about the quality of your listening/seeing, not about how much you were able to listen/see.

A seeker has all kinds of "ideas" of what Self is and as long as the ideas are there "missing" is bound to happen. This is why ATA is a important excercise when done correctly. Nowhereman

Alert attention is closely related to being conscious, as opposed to being driven by unconscious thoughts/feelings. It is expansive such that one is available to whatever shows up as opposed to the attention being contracted in thought.

What exactly is "alertness" and how do you impove it? Thanks waiting to be murdered helps. That was the premise of Bulworth. Good flick. However, I wouldn't advise hiring a contractor out on yourself as a good way to improve alertness. Our local mamza did lay in his neighborhood street waiting for the sound of cars. That might work.
