Interestingly enough, Dave Brubeck died today....
p.s.-- Dave Brubeck is the guy on the piano.

Since we're on the Latin thing ... Absolutely LOVE this trumpet. And, would about kill to get the lyrics, with the translation. My limited Spanish, and the sound quality only allows me to get tiny bits and pieces, but I think it's about a guy dreaming of a girl. It's a Cuban group, they are singing El Son: Oiga que lindo el son Que m'enseño mi guajira Listen, what a beautiful song (son is a rhythmical pattern, a latin dance) I was listening to while sleeping, my country side woman (guajira - a peasant woman) Un dia que yo soñaba Que m'enseñaba un son Once when I was sleeping I was listening to a beautiful song ( el son) in my dream. And he was inspired by that beautiful song, and he has made up this song. There is something else, how the woman called him and woke him up, I'll try to understand it, later.

Thanks, arisha, but is that all you can get out of that? That's actually wonderful, if that's what they're singing (in Spanish). But, is it possible for you to write it all out, here? Please?

Sure, Beingist, I will do it. I need to listen to it more, I don't understand all the words, not clear enough. I will do it for you, just need more time.
Listen to this one now, very beautiful:

I've made some editing in the post about lyrics (see my post no.107), and here are some more corrections: Oigan que lindo el son Que m'enseñió, mi guajira Un dia que yo soñaba Que m'enseñaba un son Y desperte l'inspiracion Como si ya lo tocara Al tiempo que dormitaba Una mujer me llamó Y entre sueño me pidió Que al despertar la golpiara - this last line is not quite clear. The next stanza is incomprehensible. I asked a Latin guy to listen to it, but he couldn't understand it. The last line is also his version, not mine. The song is about a dream which was inspirational for making this 'son', this music. He is saying about his dream to his peasant woman. When he was dreaming the woman called him, and asked him to awaken her, - this is how the guy translated the last line, but I am not sure if it's correct. A beautiful song. Do you like its melody or the rhythmical pattern? I like it how Latinos play their music as if the rhythm were "across" the melody. Very wonderful. I feel dizzy. This is rumba: This is pelon:

I'm closer than ever, now, in getting the lyrics to this. It's taken me years. Initially, I was entranced by its melody AND rythmical pattern. But, then, I really listened to the horn. A couple of years ago, a co-worker, originally from South America, listened to it, and said, "what a sad trumpet". That seemed to describe it well, for me. This trumpet is crying for something. I figured the lyrics would help me understand what it was crying for. This is usually the process I go through, when listening to music--something about the whole piece grabs me, and then I listen again (and maybe again) to the details. I rarely even listen to the lyrics until the music itself has grabbed me, which is probably due to the fact that nothing grabs me like classical music, which is without lyric (except for Opera, which is so much about voice).

I know that on one of these threads there's mention of Ravi Shankar - he passed away.
I didn't read the news article, though.
r.i.p. Mr. Shankar~*
