To me the karma points are just a bit of fun. I did think they were unhelpful at one stage but theyre good for a laugh. I think the crowd here dont take them seriously on the whole. If I get one its normally for a joke. LOL.

Peter,
The manner you asked your questions made me believe you weren't really interested in my answers, so I didn't bother. But because you ask again, I'll answer (though I still don't believe you much care, especially with the winky faces).
"Hmm, well what most community members do is make some statement about how meaningless karma points are, how they've advanced spiritually beyond such things and they really couldn't care less if they went up or down. So you're fitting in just great." This would be an example of mind reading as I have never indicated that.
"Did you mean it as in "random", an individual preference or as in an unrestrained and tyrannical exercise of power?"
(I use dictionary.reference.com because it is an awesome site with various dictionaries utilized.)
I meant arbitrary to mean any of these definitions, really a combination of them: subject to individual will or judgment without restriction; contingent solely upon one's discretion: an arbitrary decision.
founded on or subject to personal whims, prejudices, etc; capricious
having only relative application or relevance; not absolute
based on preference, bias, prejudice, or convenience rather than on reason or fact
existing or coming about seemingly at random or by chance or as an unreasonable act of individual will without regard for facts
Emphasis is my own. :-)
"Do you not care what other people think of you, your behavior and what you have to say?"
Sure I do--to a point. Does it alter what I say and do if I believe it right? Nope. But you are creating a link here: that my karma points are a reflection of what people think of me, my behavior, and what I have to say. I don't think that is quite accurate. The thing is, very few here really know anything at all about me. Michaelsees began rather hating me, if anyone can recall, but we started a conversation and -shocker- he liked me. And that really rubbed some people the wrong way, that he would compliment me while simultaneously dissing others. As if I have any bearing on what other posters here write. I've found it amusing the reactions--I tend to observe far more than act, both irl and online. And the observations here often lead me to chuckle at how one thing is claimed but another is believed, as evidenced by reactions and responses.
And generally I don't much care what people online think of me. They are seeing a slim facet, and people are free to judge as they wish. But to assume you can extrapolate an accurate measurement of my "worth" by assigning karma points? Poppycock.

Yeah, This just shows how easily they can be manipulated and faked. I would even go so far as to say that one here could be so adamant about karma points that they give them to themself! As well as take it upon themself to be detrimental to anothers.
Silly, Silly!

i am going to keep taking k. points from all of you until you stop writing this silly thread.

i've never been one to rise above a silly slap fight but come on. put the ego's away for a little while they must be tired by now.

New here, and trying to understand how ya go about getting karma points? Or giving them? And what purpose do they ultimately serve?? Sorry if that was explained somewhere above here. Need it in plain English. Thanks.

Well I can answer all of your questions: You get karma points when someone clicks exalt on your post. I am going to exalt you now because I like penguins. You can give them by clicking "Exalt" by the person's name, right below their Karma rating. Now, your question: "And what purpose do they ultimately serve??" I can answer, too: I don't know. It's an answer! I did not promise good answers though I believe I'm accurate with the first two questions you asked
