This is a term that I have just became aware of, when I was asking about Heart Bliss, from a nice man named Sifu Barry Smale. Some here may be interested in this Mettâ (Pâli; Devanagari: मेत्ता) or maitrî (मैत्री) (Sanskrit) is loving-kindness,[1][2] friendliness,[3][4][5] benevolence,[2][4] amity,[3] friendship,[4] good will,[4] kindness,[6] love,[3] sympathy,[3] close mental union (on same mental wavelength),[4] and active interest in others.[3] It is one of the ten pâramîs of the Theravâda school of Buddhism, and the first of the four sublime states (Brahmavihâras). This is love without clinging (upâdâna). The cultivation of loving-kindness (mettâ bhâvanâ) is a popular form of meditation in Buddhism. In the Theravadin Buddhist tradition, this practice begins with the meditator cultivating loving-kindness towards themself,[7] then their loved ones, friends, teachers, strangers, enemies, and finally towards all sentient beings. In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, this practice is associated with tonglen (cf.), whereby one breathes out ("sends") happiness and breathes in ("receives") suffering.[8] Tibetan Buddhists also practice contemplation of the four immeasurables, which they sometimes call 'compassion meditation'[9] "Compassion meditation" is a contemporary scientific field that demonstrates the efficacy of metta and related meditative practices. Nothing wrong with Heart Bliss You may wish to check out this talk. Sylvia Boorstein Gives a Dharma talk on the Metta Sutta. The Karaṇīya Mettā Sutta (often referred to simply as the Mettā Sutta) is a Buddhist discourse (Pali, sutta) found in the Pali Canon's Sutta Nipata (Sn 1.8) and Khuddakapatha (Khp 9). Ten verses in length, the Mettā Sutta extols both the virtuous qualities and the meditative development of mettā (Pali), traditionally translated as "lovingkindness"[1] or "friendliness."[2] Sylvia is a humerous storyteller she also wrote Happiness Is an Inside Job . I've been practicing loving-kindness meditation for a while now, as well as compassion, equanimity and Empathetic Joy. I feel these are qualities that I'm not particularily well in contact with, so I took up the practice. It's been good. Although I don't feel any major changes yet, I believe there have been some subtle ones.
