Shifting attention to different sounds and objects which blocks my imagination and reflection from even starting up. As soon as a thought arises go to another object or sound and keep shifting around not letting any thought take hold. I now do this whenever I drive or walk. Can't wast anymore time in my dream world.
Warning, if you are still interested in fantasy this won't be fun.
ZD's comment that he got no where talking about Zen masters for 10 years created motivation to stop being interested in the thought based world.
I agree with Jed too, any real practice is going to be uncomfortable. Its all about rest stops and getting uncomfortable again. We rest in our imagination until its not needed to control anymore.

I agree its not fun, but very worthwhile, I find, when driving or walking, to pick a spot in the distance and only stay "present" until reaching that spot, then repeat the same thing, I can stay attentive this way, when other ways failed me...

Thinking of an activity that you fear and visualize it creating the fear response. Watch the sensations arise and sit with it. Get comfortable with fear feelings and then use attention and inquiry to dissolve it. It can also help you do the activity your avoiding.
You know this mind/body keeps looking for ways to push past the comfort zone.
