Doing so may or may not reveal subtle vibrations manifest as a sublime fragrance or celestial music. The bliss current is present round the clock. Say, on getting up in the night, it is there. Likewise, the term ‘Hirayangarbha’ ~ meaning cosmic egg (Wiki has a page on this), it’s when I ‘saw’ the phenomena as ‘silently asked’, I was telepathically told the name. It’s Sanskrit. I had never heard of this term before. Later, I found this word used by some authors while describing their somewhat similar experiences. So, I’m not really sure about cultural influence, unless we’re looking at collective memory in the subconscious or say, unity consciousness of universal mind. What were (or are) your experiences along your journey?

Ah, so unsought, I can relate to that as well, and my comment about culture was as much if not more about about your current modes and characteristic of expression. How surprised you must have been! Curiosity, dread and desire were the forces. My cultural indoctrination was atheist, and material realist, although I was raised by lapsed Catholics. By the time I was a young adult I'd started to understand the limitations : of my intellect to fulfill curiosity, of the world to fulfill desires, and that what I dreaded was inevitable anyway. What remained though was a profound awe at the scale and complexity of the Universe, a love of sensation, and even though one can accept the inevitability of death .. well. By the time I entered middle age I was spending alot of time skiing, and my existential perspective had softened to one of a sort of tolerant, condescending agnosticism. I still pursued self-education on the topics of science and history, but was gravitating toward books that involved metaphysics. Tolle's The Power of Now was an exception to that, and why I picked it up is a whole other story in and of itself. Tolle sort of leads - almost tricks - the reader into meditation, without calling it that. A walking/talking, eyes-open meditation. One day, I woke up early, stepped out onto my back porch to stretch, and the whole world had changed. The most central aspect of this was that my mind had suddenly gone almost totally silent. There was a complete absence of any self-referential thought or emotion. No "I-thought". It was intensely blissful, and, entirely energetic. This went on for months, completely re-oriented my perspective on life, especially in the existential sense. Knowing very little of spiritual culture I didn't associate this with any set of ideas other than the ones Tolle had written. Curiosity ended, completely, for about six months, but eventually re-kindled. I found a Tolle forum where I learned about Ramana Maharsi and Nisargadatta and meditation. If you've read this far, thanks for your interest. I fell into a sitting meditation practice, in part to re-connect with that feeling of bliss, in part out of curiosity. I got interested in Zen and a guy on that forum recommended a book by a Zen master that challenged the practitioner to "arouse the mind without resting it anywhere". Curiosity, once again, became the dominant force for awhile. Many of your lines of poetry resonate deeply with that time of pursuing curiosity - not with intellect, but with open attention during waking life, complimented by sitting meditation. Eventually I started posting here, near the end of that period, this the first poem I wrote here: Every instant is an opportunity. Who we are rests irrevocably deep within and is splashed large and loud and colorfully all about us. Every moment is a chance to forget that. Every instant is an offer to know it. How could this ever end? What is this “losing it” they’re babbling on about? … ah, but the sweet peace of knowing dulls the point of awareness and the laughing thief reclining with his feet on my coffee table went unnoticed as he slipped back in. Every second is an invitation to maintain that awareness. Every moment is the gift of grace which begs our acceptance. Every instant is an opportunity. The truth that there is no I is balanced in the paradox by the truth that there is a you and in those precious instants when the windows on the soul are open to me all speculation ends even as I witness what is within by gazing steadily without. Every instant is an opportunity, even those instants when your eyes are closed to me. Every tick of the clock is the sound of a temple bell. Every noon whistle a caress of the ears, a reminder that the devil will have his due. Every cry of the cuckoo is an opportunity to smile at the devil and to see him evaporate in the parlor trick of his smoky vanishing act. Every minute is a chance to reclaim the stolen now from the thief. In every hour of every day the promise of victory by surrender is not only a promise, it is all that there is, ever will be and ever was. Every instant is an opportunity. Take my love thief, its all that you can ever steal from me. Every instant is an opportunity. There are many insightful voices here. And what I came to understand, very early on after that, was that my existential questioning had ended, as well as any fear of death. Since then I've come to understand the nature of existential questioning, and how that force of curiosity and the dread are related to it, quite directly. And how most of my existential questioning was done subconsciously, during the long decades before I read Tolle.

In our seeking, the two primary requirements are a pure heart and surrender. The former requires a shift in orientation, in thought, word and deed, moment to moment, in mindfulness, ushering watchful quietude. As for surrender, we relinquish control, cease doership. That’s how I look at it. As such, there’s no quick fix to the inquiry, since we gradually let go of, to get to, in a journey without movement. Yes it was the damndest thing because at the time it sure seemed as though following Tolle's prescriptions were what led to that bliss. "Watching the thinker" seemed causal. But there's neither any denial of what the loss of the central "I" reveals nor really any replacing it when it goes. It took months to inform this mind about acausality -- and many more strange ideas that were completely counter to my conditioned mindset prior, like nonvolition, for instance. I debated a guy on that tolle forum about that topic, but I was actually shocked that all my old ideas just couldn't square up with the direct experience of moving and acting with no "I". Everyone is unique. There are commonalities. Such as the sudden absence of the fear of death, and it can be fun to compare notes. Meditation and seeking were never painful for me. They were driven almost entirely by curiosity after that morning, and it was kinda' fun, actually.
