Ah - okay -- Aliso Canyon/Porter Ranch/LA -- got it. Sadly, it's not all that far away from me. I've been signing anti-fracking petitions left and right for some time, and I just signed another one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliso_Canyon_gas_leakthis year's Academy Awards accessory

Just as long as you remain on the other side of the continent from me -- that'll do.

Color is nice, the view is sad ..

For anyone interested, I've been dealing with what they call 'a-flutter' since early November - visited my heart doc's assistant yesterday - did an ekg - I'm definitely in a-flutter still which I knew. On 24th of December, I put in a complaint about the er doc etc. I've been referred to a heart specialist for evaluating me for a treatment called an ablation. Ablation is done when the heart's electrical system goes a bit haywire, resulting in a-fibrillation (a-fib) and a-flutter. It's scheduled for the 20th of this month. Fwiw, mindfulness keeps me on an even keel. My wife was diagnosed as having the same thing. It was discovered under anesthetic when her heart went haywire twice. Her dad had it, too. Strangely enough, we had a female environmental inspector here to inspect our new well installation, and test our water quality, and she has ablation/haywire electrical pulsing also. None of their doctor's were able to determine the cause in each case. Could be genetic. They don't really know. Mindfulness is a great choice. It's absolutely amazing how many people have this problem. Two weeks ago, I caught an article on AOL news about a couple of famous people that have a-fib and similar - Howie Mandell for one. A friend told me last week that someone they know had to have 3 ablations before it fixed their problem. The funny thing is, I was diagnosed ages ago with WPW (White-Parkinson-Wolfe) - a glitch with the heart's electrical system - screwed up signals - at that time, they said it's not something to worry about, but I suspect they'd do the heart operation as needed and hope for the best. I don't know if setting it off could be avoided if someone needs a bypass.

I don't know if setting it off could be avoided if someone needs a bypass. The environment human-kind is being confronted with could be a factor, too. Modern day life can be a lot more stressful than it used to be. Much more stressful raising and educating children. Peer pressure with kids and friends. Colleges are getting more and more picky about scholarships. Tuition rates soaring. Expectations for students rising accordingly. Problems with the food chain. Altered crops. Job stresses. War. Climate change. They all take a toll on one's health and well being. Which is why mindfulness is such a great choice on your part in the healing process. I'm certain your cardiologist will chart a good course for you to navigate with regard to the a-fib, and a return to health. I'm certain you've done a lot of research, too, as we have, and continue to do. We walk more often now as a result. Get our rest. Make healthier eating choices. I'm glad you're sharing this with all of us, too. So many great souls here amongst us all. Our thoughts and prayers for a return to vibrant good health are with you, sil. First paragraph - so true. I have no recourse but to trust my docs even though I've had experiences that make me not trust...no choice, really. It's not until I complained that they moved on getting me to a specialist about the ablation possibility. Yes, lots of great souls here.

Hi Sliver,
Sorry to hear about your heart problems, and you have my best wishes for the 20th.
As general information, lots of people have heart palpitations (fish flops) that are usually caused by stress, drinking too much coffee, stronger-than-usual exertion, lack of sleep, etc. Though sometimes scary, they're usually benign and are no big deal.
A-fib is also quite common, and it's usually controlled with medication. My dad took a small amount of digitalis every day for 50 years, and it kept his A-fib under control (he lived to 90).
Your variety of A-fib is probably the kind that cannot be controlled by medication and ablation is often used to eliminate it. I've known two people who were successfully treated with ablation.
When I was about 38, I used to go run ten to twelve miles every afternoon after finishing work. A year or so into this heavy exercise regimen, at about the ten-mile mark, I began experiencing something weird that was like having a vacuum cleaner turn on inside my chest. I went to my doc who gave me a super-strenuous stress test during which he took my heartbeat up to 150 bpm. Everything looked good until I stepped off the treadmill and laid down. He then said, "Uh oh" (which is not the sort of thing you like to hear from your doctor). I asked him what the problem was and he very worriedly said, "V-fib." That's the kind of fibrillation where people just drop dead all of a sudden. Lucky me--Ha ha. AAR he sent me to a cardiologist who looked at the printout of the test and talked to me for about twenty minutes about my lifestyle. He concluded that the V-fib was probably benign and nothing to worry about. He may have been correct, but I decided that I could live just as happily without 10 mile runs, and from that point on I hiked rather than ran for exercise.
It's amazing how many people experience an irregular heartbeat at one time or another, but the good news is that most of the time it's completely benign. When I hike mountain trails, during the first twenty minutes or so I often get some skipped beats and strong fish flops, but at this age I just assume that the heart is shifting into a lower gear as it revs up in response to a sudden change in flowrate demand. I suspect that most posters on the forum over the age of 40 have periodically experienced something similar.
A word to those who are health conscious: The one thing I recommend to people over the age of 40 is the advanced cholesterol test which measures molecule size as well as LDL, HDL, VLDL, and total C. That test is much more expensive (about $200 more) than the usual lipid profile (which is about $30), but researchers now know that small molecule LDLs are much more hazardous than large molecule LDLs, and people with that profile need to do far more to control lipid component levels than other people.

Thanks for all that info, ZD...especially the personal experiences you had with your own heart. It's always a shock when you hear of athletic types having difficultes or even dropping dead - at a very early age (usually at school during sports and gym). Our bodies are sure full of surprises.
I was told and/or read that the WPW irregular heart-beat syndrome that I have (as I said once before, I was diagnosed a long time ago yet lately, when asked, my docs say no I don't have it) - so what's going on kind of makes me wonder how true it is. I also have tested all too often with high blood pressure at the doc's and hospitals but I repeatedly tell them it's probably due to white coat syndrome - but in any event, I'm still here. Since my last trip to the ER, I've been experiencing short, quick strokes (heart-beat) with some irregular ones (a-flutter). They switched me to metoprolol from diltiazem because of strong side-effects, such as extreme swelling of my feet/ankles, face; extreme dry mouth; and constipation. The metoprolol isn't terribly good for anybody, but it sure beats the other stuff.
I intensely dislike having to depend on doctors and medicine to keep me going - but that's where I am. Because of the lethargy and those other symptoms, I'd been finding it hard to find the energy and motivation to do a lot of things - my really big over-all worry. So, I fill those moments with mindfulness and meditation. Things are different these days.

Are you doing any self healing work silver? Well, what is your idea of self-healing work? I do my best to do all the normal things like get plenty of rest, calming myself with mindfulness/meditation.
