We saw "Lion" yesterday. Great movie and an incredible story. "Hidden Figures" was also good, but I wondered how much Hollywood had doctored the story (probably will need to read the book to know). Now it's on to "Fences," "Hell or High Water," "The Salesman," "20th Century Women," and others. It's definitely the best movie season in quite a while.

HF's odds for a big oscar are good cuz of politics.

Only one theater was showing Silence, it was sold out, so saw La La Land. It was so good it hurt...and then it just hurt. You paid for pain? Tiny spoilers...........but if you know anything about the film or have read reviews or seen previews, not really... First hurt was a good hurt, like your heart is going to bust with joy, I don't really know how to describe it. ATST you know it's just a movie, and that kind of love is probably pretty rare. And then five years later....happened, and it suddenly got real, ~life happens~ real. And then you see what might have happened, with one teeny-tiny decision made differently, and a kind of avalanche effect happening, and that is life also, almost turning on the flip of a coin. And so the movie went from La La Land to life has its own twists and turns, buckle your seat belts....and the memory and sadness and not-sadness, that's how life is....... If you want to pay for pain, go see Manchester By the Sea, but it is very good also. It reminds me of another film, pretty good, kind of science fiction-ee.e. But similar themes. Another Earth (literally, another earth appears in the sky, identical, like identical twins). Both had very personal meaning for me.... AE...how life can change in the blink of an eye...

Yes, there was also a French film many years ago with a similar kind of theme. At the end of the movie the girl (now a woman) drives into a gas station in an expensive car. She's very well dressed. The fellow (now a man) is the station attendant who comes out to service her car. I can't remember the name of the movie (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg?). It also reminded me of how the movie "Splendor in the Grass" ends. There's lots of existential pathos and poignance in the films this year.

Oh, incidentally, have you ever read the book The Moviegoer? It's a 1961 ('62?) novel which won the ('62) National Book Award without even having been nominated for the award. Just word of mouth got it to the judges and they liked it better than the other books nominated. It's my favorite novel (which is not a real big deal, as I do not reach much fiction). Walker Percy's first (published) novel. Doctor turned existential novelist via studying the Existentialist philosophers and novelist, Kierkegaard and Dostoevsky, etc., being bed-bound for over a year after contracting TB doing medical research just out of medical school.

I have seen all of above my fave ones are Lion, and Fences a movie where DW acted his heart out, I knew he was a great actor, but this one puts him on only a level for him. I agree HF had quite a bit of the Hollywood formula going on

But don't read anything about Manchester, and don't look at trailers. In a good film there are many times one particular line sells the whole film. There is one scene in Manchester that tells the whole story, in about three two seconds. Casey Affleck won Golden Globe best actor award. I say he will win also the Academy Award for best actor. He is perfectly un-self-conscious-acting, acting non-acting, acting like a real person, which is not easy to do. It is easily now in my top five all-time favorite films. In Rocky the scene is when Burgess Meredith (old trainer) is talking to Rocky and told him, rather early in the film: You could have been GREAT! but here you are, breaking thumbs for a living (or some such, don't recall precisely the words. IOW, it wasn't a fluke that Rocky had a split decision). Also for Rocky, I saw in the pre-film credits that Silvester Stallone wrote the screenplay. That really kept me glued to the film, a marvel in and of itself.
