I've been wanting to respond to this since you first posted it, and thanks to an article on msnnews this morning, I can do a better job. I'm wondering how you expect people to utilize 'fasting and physical exercise' when those fat/obese folks are addicted to the foods, by design of the manufacturers - this isn't news, but for some very strange reason(s), we give the beloved 'food' manufacturers a decidedly undeserved pass. Unless you've been living in a cave with blinders on and your fingers in your ears, you can't ignore the fact that these corporations have been tinkering with all their processed foods to make you want more. That's called addiction. They add addictive stuff to their so-called food. Why do we allow it? Money, of course. But who is making this money: politicians mostly. If anything, we should've sued all the corporations that make these food-stuffs with all sorts of poison in them. I can attest to the addictive quality of these things because about a decade ago, I decided I had to go 'cold turkey' on Cheetos. Yeah, sounds funny, huh? I could NOT walk past the displays in the grocery stores because alarm bells went off in my head that I HAD to have them. It was that strong. Once I made the decision to swear off of them, it wasn't so hard. That meant I had to walk past them without reacting. It took a lot of will to do that and live with my decision. Not sorry I did, but in the past couple months, I decided it wouldn't hurt to buy a bag of two. I did, but it just proved that there's something hidden inside those neon-orange puffy things that twisted my arm before the decision to quit them. I was far more cognizant of the down-side to eating them: that stuff sticks like mad to your fingers, you can't just rinse it off - you have to wash with both hands to get that stuff off with your fingertips. Oh...anyway, on to the article on msn: "Unhealthy Ingredients: Monosodium glutamate, Yellow #6 It’s not your imagination: This orange, puffy snack melts the second it hits your tongue —a phenomenon food scientists like Steven Witherly have dubbed “vanishing caloric density.” And it’s definitely not an accidental quality of your chips, either. Food developers know that when foods melt quickly, it tricks the brain into thinking you're not eating as many calories. In turn, snackers wind up eating a much larger serving. The sound Cheetos make when you bite into them was also specially developed to get you hooked. The crunchy sound makes them taste more appetizing, likely because we associate the sound with freshness, according to a study in the Journal of Sensory Studies. What’s more, Cheetos are doused with MSG, which has been shown to increase appetite and make foods taste even more delicious. Plus, Cheetos are one of the 8 Most Addictive Foods in the World. Eat This! Instead: Blue Diamond Natural Almond Nut-Thins in Cheddar Cheese. These rice and almond-based crackers offer a Cheeto-esque taste with three grams of hunger-busting protein per serving. Most importantly, they’re free of those tricky vanishing calories that cause us to overeat." This article had an extensive list of modern poisonous foods, such as coffee creamers, oreos, fruit juices, etc. www.msn.com/en-us/health/nutrition/75-unhealthiest-foods-on-the-planet/ss-BBoSFkF?li=BBnb7Kz#image=27We should place warning signs/photos of diseased kidneys, hearts on all packed junk foods ( Cheetos ) just like what they did to packs of cigarettes in the Philippines. Do you know if this campaign had a positive effect on the amount people smoke? Do you think that if illegal street drugs were legalized, and they put such pictures on the product packaging, it would have the desired effect to encourage the customers (addicts) to cut back and/or work on quitting?

Do you think that if illegal street drugs were legalized, and they put such pictures on the product packaging, it would have the desired effect to encourage the customers (addicts) to cut back and/or work on quitting? Smokers don`t quit. Rarely they do. I smoked cigarettes when I was at the age of eight. I stopped at the age of 56 ( I will be 60 4 months from now ). I was influenced by my great grand father, Marcos who smoked Matutina, a sweet tasting filterless cigarette was an undefeated town mayor. He died at the age of 103 years old. My grand father, Epifanio, ( father side ) a retired dentist, smoked, too. He died at the age of 92 years old. My father ( a pathologist, dermatologist and family physician ) smoked at the age of 11 years in 1940 and quit in 2000. Fifteen years later in 2015 at the age of 86 he was diagnose with pulmonary emphysema. He is still alive at 88 and bed-ridden because of this ailment. With regards to putting labels/photos on cigarette packs, it wont perhaps deter the smokers who were already smoking when they were still young. But maybe it will discourage those who are thinking of smoking ( tobacco/dope ) as their pastime. These beginners will think twice of the consequence of smoking. Same thing with junk food. People hooked on junk like Cheetos think twice if the packaging of these processed foods are labeled with photos of diseased kidneys and hearts.

I think your bloodline has a wonderful longevity factor! Amazing, 103/92 - okay, but STILL - maybe they could've lived even longer if they hadn't smoked? I had a b/f whose dad smoked 4 packs a day - he died of emphysema or some lung problem - I think he was an older gentleman but not super-old. How many packs a day did your relatives smoke?
What do you think about my last question: " Do you think that if illegal street drugs were legalized, and they put such pictures on the product packaging, it would have the desired effect to encourage the customers (addicts) to cut back and/or work on quitting?"

My relatives smoked 1 pack of cigarettes/day. Maybe if they did not smoke they die earlier. I saw two Korean teenagers at a fast food joint after they ate burger and spaghetti, they went outside to a veranda reserved for smokers. They took a pack of cigarette from their bags. The packs have labels/photos on them and yet they seem not to mind the consequence of what they were doing. Maybe same thing with illegal drugs/alcohol. If illegal drugs were legalize and packaged, labeled with photos to tell how it will affect their health, they would still do it. Because young people do not care what happens for taking them. They love to take what is forbidden. We only care due to attachment with things and family that we refrain from it lest we die early. Afraid we no longer get to enjoy these amenities. Yet there are people past 60 who continue to smoke, do drugs and alcohol.

If one were to choose to get, mental anguish or physical pain, which likely one will want? Considering mental anxiety and physical suffering, whether one likes it or not, manifest themselves. It maybe said that when there`s chronic physical pain, mental anguish/anxiety follow. Well, last night, we receive a text from our daughter who got wed civilly on Aug 18. She is 12 weeks pregnant. She said she has slight bleeding. She was immediately taken to the nearest hospital. The OB-Gyne resident told her cervix was open. There was no doubt she will suffer a miscarriage. It`s her first pregnancy. There in the hospital bed, I can see her anxiety and the physical pain she is going through. I know it`s painful mentally to know how hard our daughter wanted this child. Yet there are questions asked why such occur. I even went to the Basilica del Sto Nino a month ago and petitioned the Holy Child Jesus to keep my daughter healthy and her baby safe. But it happened. My daughter a few moments from now will undergo surgery ( D & C ) once the fetus is expelled to remove the remaining embryonic tissues/placenta attached to her womb. I do hope and pray there be no complications ( bleeding/infection ). So, no matter how a person is detached from mental anxiety/physical pain he`s suffering because of the world, one can not help but grieve over the loss of a grand child.

I'm sorry to hear that, my thoughts are going out to your daughter. Praise the Lord, Silv. My daughter delivered earlier a 12 weeks baby boy with the placenta spontaneously. She did not undergo dilatation and curettage to remove them. I explained to my son-in-law and his father that the reason perhaps the miscarriage happened is the baby was not formed normally ( genetic abnormality ). So, it`s nature I guess that it has to occur that way without human intervention. It was divine. God wont allow a baby to be born with abnormalities out into the world only to suffer. God is all-merciful, He terminated my daughter`s pregnancy ( abnormal ) without the dire complications. A million thanks, Silv, for sending those wonderful thoughts you gave to my daughter.

What I know is that when the fetus inside the womb of my daughter was only 8 weeks old, her Obstetrician prescribed her folic acid, Obimin, a multivitamin and Calvin Plus, a multivitamin with Calcium. I did not oppose this management because I thought it was the latest trend in prenatal care. In my experience earlier in my practice as government physician, I only prescribe only one multivitamin not two or three to my pregnant patients which takes place in the 2nd trimester. I felt the giving of numerous multivitamins to my pregnant daughter too early interfered in the development of the baby causing the miscarriage to become spontaneous. It`s different when you intentionally abort the baby. The placenta do not spontaneously separate when the fetus is delivered in criminal/therapeutic abortions. It sticks to the uterine wall leading to profuse vaginal bleeding. In this case, a dilatation and curettage ( d&c) is immediately done otherwise the patient goes in shock.

It very well may have been too much of a good thing, for the doc to give her that much vitamin pills. But we all don't know for sure what caused it to happen. Just be happy things weren't worse. Incidentally, I remember when I was in my early-ish teens, a friend I visited had lots of those tabloid newspapers, and there was an article with photos of babies with deformed heads - seriously deformed. Their facial features (nose, ears, etc.) were all over the place - one had the nose on the crown of their head, etc. So, 'bad' babies do get born. I also had a cousin who had cerebral palsy. I think that people are born with it, aren't they? I was born with ill-formed metatarsals in both feet - everyone back then thought I was pigeon-toed and had to wear those clod-hopper shoes that did no good. Later in life, I found out from a podiatrist that the metatarsals were bowed in and he described my feet like the beginning of club-feet! Eek! They don't look abnormal from the outside, but it explained why everyone thought I had something different going on.

Maybe when you were still inside the womb of your mother, the development of your feet did not turn out the way it should. But you are lucky. Many are born with congenital heart defects, conjoined heads/bodies, etc. Hindu religion says it`s bad karma. That is if you believe in that.

Your daughter is lovely, how is she doing? Dear Silv, I can not speak for my daughter how she feels. Her mother-in-law said to us that she will concentrate/focus more on her career as a registered nurse. She passed the Qualifying English Test 3 months ago needed to enter New Zealand. Her husband, a seaman, will spend for her placement fee, processing of visa for her to work there. My daughter is strong and I know she can take the temporary setback in her life. She is our youngest. Her two elder brothers are abroad. One a registered nurse is a permanent resident in UK and the other an engineer ( communications ) is looking for a job ( job search visa ) in Christchurch, New Zealand. He arrived there on August 18, the same day my daughter got wed. Once he gets a job there, his family will follow. My daughter if she were a man is a copy of me. So, how do she and me feel about it? Sober and determined to have that baby back. Not hurriedly but in slow mo. Yours truly, Melvin
