shirtspotting this weekend...saw several of these: wish some of the candidates were making more of space exploration... I agree. My brother is the CBS correspondent at Cape Canaveral who reports on space news (you've probably seen him on TV), so I get the daily updates on all of the space stuff that's happening. Very cool indeed. It would be great if the general public understood the wide range of technological benefits that result from space exploration. It's an exciting time for astrophysicists, astronomers, and other scientists involved in the NASA programs. It's a lucky coincidence that the movie, "The Martian" will hit theaters next week. LOL cool cool it would be nice if the government would slash DOD spending to about zero, and put it in to something a bit more beneficial.. like NASA... or almost anything else really

LOL certainly points to a hollywood-NASA marketing conspiracy (they've been sitting on this data for a while).

Listened to most of the announcement, it was a moving thing! In general I found salt explanations interesting: "On Mars, pure liquid water is highly unstable. Unlike on Earth, where it boils at 100 degrees Celsius, it boils at just 10 degrees. Nut perchlorates increase the stability of water on Mars, causing it to remain liquid to -70 degrees Celsius, and to boil at 24 degrees." ( www.fox26houston.com/news/26033982-story ) Looks like some intelligence is there The great thing about the article is that it gives the name of the NASA mission ("Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter").

They'd known about the evidence of the flows (changing light/dark over time around certain places like around the lips of canyons) and suspected what they were for years now. It'll be interesting to read the details that led to making the announcement. Bet they wish that had that rover money back for a do over right about now. Basically, they noticed current periodic changes in the areas indicating flows. From the press release the conclusion is based on spectroscopic analysis which indicates "hydrated salts". I read about the speculation based on the changing colors in the areas of suspected seasonal flow a few years back, but don't know when they first got this particular result.
