We can say something that is obviously true in order to establish that there is such a thing as the truth.
What's true is:
One can only be aware in this moment.
There's not choice about that. Nothing can be done about it. It's inevitable. Simply true.
What we face is the distractions as the mind wanders back into the past and the future or fantasizes and loses conscious awareness of being aware. One is then lost in life's dream and playing the lead role within it. As that character, all that happens affects them. They are burnt by fire and soothed by wine, and continually and unwittingly compelled by both pleasure and pain as the character occupies the entirety of attention, and being distracted thus, never so much as inquires as to wherefrom that attention originates, and is thereby no longer self aware.
Eventually, after experiencing fleeting happiness in pleasure yet deep misery and trauma in pain, the person is never truly fulfilled and becomes increasingly weary of 'pursuit of happiness' - and this is what a seeker does; pursues happiness - rather, is unwittingly compelled by the senses and a terrible sense of lack - but actually, is merely distracted from awareness in this moment by the excitement of the role.
The tricky part to this is stopping. The thing with letting go is it can't be done. By definition, it's the cessation of doing, but you can't attempt to cease the (seeming) actions and reactions because you are a character in a dream being blown hither and tither as part of the overall scenery.
What is true is true and this is the point: Awareness is only in this moment. It's not a choice. It's not optional. It just is.
You're welcome.
